  • please sign up to this, not just because my OH is working on this project, but mostly because it should not be happening...

    http://www.fishfight.net/

  • done.

fisheries policies are not a Tory strong point. as with so many other areas of politics...

  • Doesn't say why half the fish are being thrown back dead.

I'm sure it's a size/quota thing, but the site could put up a bit more info.

    I've signed up though.

  • Saw on the beep, something with Attenborough, that if we keep fishing like we do today it'll be sustainable for another 30 years. Then we fucked the seas up so much it's irreparable.

No more fish fingers for me

  • It is supposed to deter boats from overfishing their quota for a particular species/catching fish that are too young by penalising them financially for landing them. They obviously don't know what they've caught till the take their nets in so any fish that are too small/wrong species have to be thrown back, most of the time they are dead... this seems stupid, and is, but is in theory to stop people making money out of illegally caught fish and make more of an effort not to breach quotas etc.

its a stupid system, especially when Faroese boats are now just using huge aqua hoovers to suck fish into their boats indiscriminately and refusing to abide to any notion of quotas anyway.

  • i don't get what the desired out come of this is. do they want us to be able to eat all the fish they catch or do they want fishermen to catch less fish and be less wasteful?

  • its not clear to me anyway.

  • judging from the 'letter' it seems they want to change the policy so what is caught and dead isn't wasted. fucking stupid.

  • I don't know... I can understand you have to have a way of controlling the fishing industry and enforcing internationally agreed quotas but the waste seems both unforgivable and counterproductive. Surely they could land them but not get paid for them, thus lowering overall market price slightly and having the same deterrent effect but without the waste?

  • that wouldn't serve the fishermen and their industry so i doubt that would happen. nice in theory though.

ultimately, the whole industry is messed up and in need of reform from the roots up.

  • I'm all over this. has anyone got a copy of the "end of the line" film btw? i've been trying to get hold of it for ages. It was on film4 a while back but isn't available online for some reason.

  • Just read the letter, it's not very well written, argumentative or to the point. Big shame really since the campaign is backed by some big names and will have a lot of people signed up

anyhow. trawlers. why the fuck are they used?

  • So, what are they proposing? What's the solution?

  • indeed.

  • ask hugh ferny wittlebottom.

  • just emailed them and said the letter is a bit weak. Not referencing any papers / research etc, and the lack of proposed solutions

hopefully they take it onboard and re-write it. shame to waste a good campaign on a shit letter

this. the site seems to be relying on people being moved by images of fish being dead and then hysterically signing up. gives rather limited info on why the fish are being thrown back and what the solution is, which puts me off.

  • yeah. i'm holding judgment on whether this is a good campaign or not until they clear it up. but i will put £5 on it being a disappointment - i.e lets eat what is caught rather than a save the seas idea. :P
