Too thin, but I get your drift.

Surely someone on the forum must be able to knock some of these up to your liking? *

sorry, didn't mean to be blunt.
I had trouble searching on ebay when finding leather for mudflaps. just putting leather into the search brought back some 'interesting' results.
1-2mm is fine to cut with good scissors. off cuts are so cheap you'll have plenty of practice material

Get some leather samples from a vendor of sofas. free, and about the right thickness.
use a craft knife.
Hey presto, hub shiners. -

I have some reasonable leather scraps on my desk right now, I can easily do you some like the bottom photo. PM me and I'll send you a pair.

Hey presto, hub shiners.I have no old belt spare so cannot make some, nor do I have a leather hole punch or craft knife.

s.walrus,
The front one needs to be around 32cm length for a closed circumference of 30cm.
The rear one needs to be around 46cm length for a closed circumference of 44cm.If the scraps are big enough to accommodate those lengths, then that would be fabulous.

The ones from CRC haz crystals.
This is a bonus as we all know crystals are good for your micro aura. -
• #10
for those lengths you need offcuts. samples are good for ordinary hubs - about the size of mudflaps.
Hackney's supposed to have a lot of furniture makers, right? -

I will have books of leather swatches available soon.

piece of piddle, with two old toe straps. i can do it
-
• #14
2 straps around the one hub? But then they would be balanced and not spin... that's the bit that cleans the hub.
-
• #15
one on each hub, dimwit!!
-
• #16
Not long enough, dimwit!!
-
• #17
Well, they would be for smaller hubs.

use a carradice strap, you could stain it to suit, and they come in a variety of lengths.

I'll have to make them from two halves, but that's not a problem.
I'll give one a go now, and post up a picture.
I shit you not... I'd like a pair.
Now what I'd really like is a traditional pair of leather ones that can be affixed around large hubs (I have a Schmidt dynamo hub up front, and a Rohloff at the back).
They should be narrow enough to move around (to do the cleaning) and thick enough to not easily break and also to help soak up grim.
I have no old belt spare so cannot make some, nor do I have a leather hole punch or craft knife.
These are out: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=54009 as they're ugly.
I'm thinking more like this:
This one is way too fat and ugly:
This doesn't look too bad but won't suit my bike:
This looks just about perfect and is on sale in Japan... but being so low value it is pointless to ship it around the world:
So... anyone know where you can buy them in London? Or anyone who can make them?
I'd like a cherry leather, and it must be unfinished on the inside (otherwise it's kinda pointless).
Oh, and I am edscoble.
