  • Okay, I was thinking of chroming an aerospoke....can this be done...?

forgive me if its a dumb question its 3.25am in ze morning! LOL

  • Yeah...

  • i dont know if you could chrome one but i know theres a paint out that looks exactly the same as chrome and lasts longer, your local powder coaters will know what its called

  • thanks doood! (no seriously thank you)

    =D

  • Chrome is heavy. Spoke's heavy. Just don't. Paint it.

  • good point. very good point. cheers dude.

  • In all respect I think the golden turd speaks for itself. I think it may make ANY bike look awful.

  • i live for threads like this.
i want to see it reach a happy conclusion.

  • isnt there one which is painted silver in their inventory?

  • wouldn't it be easier to paint everything else in a matte laquer so that the aerospoke looked more shiny?

you know, rest of bike, you, street, buildings on your route, people, etc etc.

  • Easiest to go to one of the Vinyl wrapping places that specialise in cars, vans and so forth I'd think.

I saw a Datsun GT-R on Charlotte Street the other day that had full chrome wrap, it went straight through Vulgar and onto cool in one go.

  • OK, before the piss taking gets completely out of hand (oh, it already has...oh well), here's the serious answer:

You can't chrome plate it, but you can achieve the look of chrome plating using a technique commonly called vacuum plating or PVD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_vapor_deposition to put a thin layer of pure aluminium on the surface, which is then protected from corrosion with a clear gloss lacquer. This is the process used to make the metallised parts of Airfix kits.

  • Please please please post pictures of this!

  • See what I mean? So vulgar it becomes cool:

  • No :-) Is that even legal?

  • we have alot of compenets vacum metalised at work.
verry expensive, and only really works well on small parts, as the part has to be coated in a vacum chamber. You normally can only coat one side of your part as well, because it has to held in place on a jig.

The finish isn't very hard wearing, and in general pretty crappy on anything bigger than shoe box size.

  • Cover it in tin foil!

  • Yes, could be a problem finding anybody with a PVD chamber big enough to take a wheel who will also handle small one-off jobs like this. Teer Coatings, for example have chambers of 500mm dia x 600mm long, so not quite big enough for a 700c wheel, but much bigger chambers are made, such as this at 1800mm dia x 3500mm high

  • You can get it plated at a fancy jewellery workshop.

There is a technology, (I cant remember what its called) which allows you to apply extremely thin plating, often of Gold to random materials.

Ive seen them Gold plate a fucking apple at a jewellery smithing school. Im sure this method would work for a plastic wheel.

  • There is a technology, (I cant remember what its called)

It's PVD. We know what the technology is, the problem is finding somebody to do it to something the size of a wheel.

  • Troll. This whole thing is a con...

  • howdy c0n

I've had some strange ideas at 3.25 in morning too...

I had some work done on a hillman imp with with these guys and they were very good quality for a non-london price. They also do spray chroming.

I'm a newbie and in nursery so chalking up my 3 posts starting here, anyone any good with nappy pins?
