Some airlines will - or at least used to - offer some sort of special pricing on compassionate grounds. I've (fortunately) never been in a position to use this service, but I imagine that it's only available from them directly and may not be any better on price than normal ticketing routes, though I guess they may be able to offer more flexibility.
(As an example, here's Continental's policy, though I know this won't be any help directly - http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/specialneeds/compassion/default.aspx. I think Bereavement or Compassionate Fare seem to push Google's buttons.)
Anyway, I'm sorry for your loss and hope that things pass as smoothly as possible for you and yours

Thanks guys- and I got sorted.
HI Guys, any tips on getting cheapish tickets in a hurry- I need to go to SA for my grandfather's funeral this week. Do I just trawl the std. last minute flight sites or do any of the airlines do anything specially useful in this situation?
