• So, a pretty awesome school mate of mine is having some bike angst and I've offered to help her out. I quoted her for a tonne of new parts from the shop, then discovered that there is more wrong with her bike than I had originally thought. I feel for her and just want to make sure she's commuting safely as she's been having a rather rough time.

So, her rear wheel is knackered, it's a 700c and she would be fine with either a single speed wheel or a road wheel.

A crank set that isn't completely rinsed (SS compatable, IE you can get it down to a single chainring), as she'll need a new BB it doesn't matter what taper it is.

And the big one is that it might end up that she'll eventually need a new frame. I'm open to ideas, and she has a little bit of money to work with. I think a 53 would fit her.

Thanks in advance, anything would be helpful

  • yo.
I have a BB for £5 or i'm sure i have one with a missing cup you can have.
Oh and I have a ss rear wheel with sprocket for £25.

  • Wow! She's sorted with the front wheel and the handlebar s then? :-)

    Good luck, N.

I've got nothing left, but some brake levers, brakes and a saddle. Sorry.

  • Wicksie, I'm dragging my feet on the BB until after we have a crankset, but thanks so much for the offer!

EEI, well, she has a complete bike, but it has some issues. And the frame is VERY heavy, heavier than I thought possible with a vintage raleigh. Her rear mech fell apart and I'm making it a SS, she's happy to spend some money but I think someone has done something silly to her rear wheel as the axle now appears to be threaded in two different thread sizes. I know, fucking hell, right? In any case, I thought I had an extra road wheel I could SS for her but I can't find the flipping thing.

    MEH.

  • Cool, no worries. I think I have a heavy old SS rear wheel you can have if she doesn't want to spend money.

  • Oh! Yes, that might be an option.
I think I just remembered where my road wheels might be, but there is a good chance that they have been lost in the great multi-move of 2010

  • I got a Marin Larkspur frame for 50p off ebay earlier that she'd be welcome to. Right size I think. Not the coolest frame but it sounds like it would be lighter that what she's got...

  • I have some pretty much new 170mm Sora cranks, they are a triple but run fine as a single (50 outer ring, 39 middle and 30 inner) if you buy short bolts for either of the 2 outer rings. You would need a Hollowtech 2 BB.

Also have a 700c Rigida Nova/Miche Primato rear wheel, with a Campag compatible freehub. Avg condition, might have 1 loose spoke.

£20 for both, preferably collected from SE London but may be able to get them to Shoreditch.

  • Thanks to everyone, I'll check with what we have in the shop for converting a Campag wheel to SS and PM you tomorrow, but I think I might take you up on that, Mr Canny.

I think that the Marin might be pushing it a bit...BTW, why on earth did you end up with it? I can't imagine what use you would have for a hybrid!

  • If you are looking for something to convert it to single speed, then I also have one of these nearly new:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Gusset_1-ER_Campag_Single_Speed_Conversion_Kit/5360051783/

£30 for the wheel, cranks and conversion kit.

Um yes. Damn ebay finger. There is a part of my brain that is telling me I need a proper beater for the rare occasions when I have to lock up at a station overnight. The intelligent part of my brain says there is another way to deal with a situation that happens only once or twice a year. I think I'm just desperate for a new project!

  • I have a rear road wheel you can have for £5. I'll get you more info tomorrow.

It's the shimano on unbranded silver low profile rim. For 6 speed screw on block so will take a freewheel. Needs a skewer. Although I have a bolt on axle you could take for an extra £5 if you wanted to fit it for her.
    Based in SE14 after 6pm.
    word

  • I found my road wheel and I've been offered a crankset.
    Thank you awesome people.
    Xx

  • Good times Nhatt, let me know if you still need a square taper BB.
