you have to take off or split the seat stay to put a stent in ,quicker to put a new stay on its an easy repair for a frame builder but it will need a respray

Problem is that a respray would be more than the repair. With the stent repair it was suggested that it could be touched up by a skilled enamel painter. Can you decribe the stent repair in more detail perks?

a stent goes inside atube and is bonded or welded ,IE an internal lug.Ive never done one I would either braze around the crack depending what it really looks like under the paint or pull the stay off and pop a new one on far easier.Would need to be a genius to touch that up without seeing it after far easier to spray the whole lot, depends how fussy you are

Thanks perks. Do you think the crack looks a little too near the end of the stay for a stent to work?

If you're going to do a stent repair that high up you're inevitably going to ruin the paint on the seat tube too-it's too close to the lug. far better just repair the whole stay. Or get a refund to cover a similar frame-looks to be a fairly basic reynolds (nice paint tho!) so shouldn't be too hard?

no should work but I agree with what Gregorio says, repairs like this are always a PIA you never know whats involved until you get stuck in id rather replace the whole section properly.Be brave take the paint off locally and have a proper look, you might be able to just get it brazed up

Hello,
It is high up as previuosly stated above so it looks like the spiggot (as we call them) as has broke and not the stay itself, I must say that is very rare to break infact its very rare for a seat stay to crack full stop, never mind at the top.
Yes we could either fit a spiggot but as also stated above it's easier and possibly more reliable to put a whole stay on. Either way sadly it will require a respray. we could blow it in, but that would cost £50 ish and it wont be perfect, having the whole frame sprayed inc shotblasted back to bare metal is 'only' £95As for the repair, to put in a spiggot (if I can find one the correct size and style) would be around £35 otherwise for 2 around £60
Hope this helps

refund
Hi all,
I recently bought a bike that turned out to have a crack in the seat stay just below where it's brazed to the seat tube lug. It looks to have started on the side facing the seat tube and made its way around the tube in both directions. pics below. The crack isn't just to the paint.
The seller couldn't be a nicer guy and is willing to refund the bike but he has also suggested a stent repair of the seat stay. I had a quick google of stent repair but nothing came up in regards to frame repairs. From the results I can only assume that a stent repair is where another tube is inserted into the seatstay.
Has anyone had anything stent repaired and can comment? I'm worried about how long they might last.
Thanks
