Right Handed Lockrings

  • Bit of an odd question and i know that it will unscrew with skid stops, but does anyone know someone who sells/has/throws out lockrings that don't have reverse threads?
I don't have a fixed hub,l i have a freewheel compatible hub, and I want at least something on it to stop the sprocket unscrewing
Not expecting anything, just having a look.

i did search, sorry if this topic has been addressed already, feel free mods to delete this thread if it has.

  • Are you trying to run a fixed sprocket on a normal/freewheel thread?

    Don't do that.

  • I don't think a right hand lockring would do a very good job of stopping the cog unscrewing.

  • I tried once with an old type of bottom bracket ring...and it didn't stop.freewheel can not be treated the same as fixed gear..

  • the bottombracket lockring will fit, its still unsafe and not called a suicide hub for nothing, best to glue the cog on tho

  • Doesn't pedaling keep the cog screwed tight on SS? How does it unscrew?

It's when he stop pedalling that the trouble starts :-)

    1: Don't skid
    2: Fit two brakes
3: Trialtech sprocket has a longer thread than any track sprocket, which gives a good bond area for
    4: Loctite 271 or Truloc 360

I read it too quickly, thought he was running SS.

    Bye

  • I too have done this with a BB lockring back when you couldn't get a track hub for £15 from people like on-one. I didn't skid, and it was always ok for me, and people didn't used to have such a problem with it. If your anything like me, you'll soon spend so much time worrying about it that you'll have sold a kidney to get a new hub....

  • Like fruit said, its not called a suicide hub for nothing. Check the classifieds for a cheap rear wheel? or ride SS?

  • A suicide hub is fine if you use two brakes. If you want to completely obsess about safety, just make sure there's space for the sprocket to unscrew all the way off without the chain jamming against the inside of the seat stay.

  • Try using loctite 638 or 648 if your worried.

This stuff will keep it together make sure threads are clean and grease free, to remve will require alot of heat.

  • Many, many years ago it was standard practice to convert your road bike to fixed for winter training by simply unscrewing the freewheel, screwing on a sprocket and shortening the chain. No lockring. Rest of the bike remained so 2 brakes stayed on. Never had a problem with this, or even saw it as a problem.

    How times change :-)

  • In the 1800's, doctors prescribed heroin to children as a cough suppressant.

  • It was good stuff back then though, not the shit you get nowadays. #nostalgia#

  • *goes off to invent time machine....

  • they don't call it 'junk' for nothing...

Many (only slightly older) riders I know did this, and thought that's how I'd 'fix' my bike. They did see the problem and most used lockrings (bottom bracket ones). Some say don't use a lockring so if your chain gets jammed the sprocket unscrews instead of locking up your back wheel.

Do it right, a new wheel with fixed/free hub, cog and lockring fitted, can be had for ~£60.

    I've just passed my 50th birthday - that's me :-)

  • I have one of those lockrings. Utterly pointless. Loctite/new hub

  • I have a piece of shit freestyle bike I have built up to see if I enjoy that type of riding and am currenlty running fixed on a ss hub, I use another cog, added advantage of storage. I have ridden another bike like this on the road and found if it loosened it only loosened a bit at a time, start to feel play, tighten it up. Install both with rotafix method. Still having said that, you are still better off with a fixed hub, get one.

  • cheers guys, sounds like i will be buying a new hub.
