Could be doable on fixed. The considerations are that while French roads don't tend to be steep (unless you hit some serious back roads) they can be long. In the case of the alps, this can be very long. Whilst that will be fine on the ascents in the right gear, it can be restrictive on the descending. I've done some touring around that area and coming out of places like Sospel and Grasse, it's perfectly possible to be doing long fastish descents that last for 20-30 minutes. I certainly wouldn't want to be doing that on a fixed climbing gear.
I'd advise going free with as large a fixed as your chain will go to on the other side for those flat days in the north and being a fixie skidder on the coast.
Hi,
my friends and I are planning on cycling from London to Monaco - going through the Alps (1000 miles) next Summer and well i was hoping to do it on my fixed bike / freewheel. Just wondering if this was an okay idea and if anyone else has done such a large distance (with a lot of uphill) on single speed before. Im contemplating whether or not i should sell my fixed and get a road bike instead :/
Any advice is welcomed :)
thanks
