i love old country. can't really get on with any modern commercial country because i like rough edges and human imperfection. with modern stuff the teeth are too white, the suits too shiny, the lyrics too clever, the production to polished and the band too tight. do not want.
i'm huge hank williams fan. like a bit obsessed. merle travis is obviously a god.
am big into that late 60s psychedelic country thing. huge flying burrito bros, gram parsons, clarence white era byrds thing. i'm listening to outtakes from sweetheart of the rodeo right now as it happens, "one hundred years from now".
also when i'm feeling cheesy might rock bit of lefty frizell or george jones etc. great stuff.
was hugely into loads of modern alt country stuff for years starting with son volt and all the rest of the no depression regulars. kind of burned out on it after a while though. my favourites from that scene are ones that broke out of the alt strict country mould... bonny prince billy, bill callaghan as smog, wilco, giant sand, neko case etc. ooh, gillian welch "the (the revelator)" just came on random. sweet.
bought myself a "chicken pickin'" guitar book earlier this year and have been trying to expand my pitiful repetoire of country cheats and tricks.
yup. i like country.

I can't stand most the new stuff... that Shelton is the kinda person older/genuine country singers sing about... have you heard Bootliquor FM on iTunes radio? "Music for saddle weary drunks" seams fitting...

First up we have 'Austin', a fucking soppy love song that is undoubtedly the best song to base it's lyrics on answering machine messages. What kind of love must that be indeed... fucking awesome...
YouTube - Blake Shelton - Austin (Video)
Just listened to half of it, that ain't country (boy).
