  • no, but i would LOVE to.

    are you planning a trip?

  • Yes. Your life in their hands.

  • can't say i've ridden it but have travelled extensively around east africa and north africa

in kenya get down to the coast to lamu stunning

  • im going to Kenya in a couple of weeks. Iv heard good things about Lamu.

  • beautiful tropical island
    no cars
nice bars over looking blue ocean
    great beaches stunning food
    kenya prices

  • got invited on a three month cycle tour through those countries with a few people in the spring. probably no way i can afford it but am curious about safety/ road/ feasibility etc. might pick up a second job....

  • Safety is definitely an issue. Read up for each individual country that you might go to. That said, it is beautiful in ways that a TV can never show you. From your intinerary, it is Kenya that could cause the most concern, especially as there is a growing radicalisation there in certain sectors.

  • Sad you're not going to Angola.

  • I can't be the only one who's first thought upon reading the title was this:

  • Senegal, Gambia, Ghana, Morocco... West Africa for the tasty win...

Might be heading to SA for a wedding in the new year too.

  • west africa sucks, balki
east africa is the only place to go

  • You have to be careful of the lions. Buy a Raleigh and you should be fine.

but even then they will nick it while you are alseep.

  • zimbabwe, zambia, tanzania, kenya, ethiopia...

People don't even drive land rovers across these countries without getting killed.

  • the africa fixed gear and single speed forum will kill you in the face if you go in their endz with your fixie skidder kattt

  • People don't even drive land rovers across these countries without getting killed.

Toyota Land Cruisers on the other hand...

  • Jaygee, would you like to ride a bicycle through Zimbabwe?

    (that's hypothetical not an invitation)

  • I have trouble riding a bicycle across Surrey.

  • On a serious note I have never been to Zimbabwe, so I couldn't give any opinion.

*The third world is weird. 99.99% of the population are amazing friendly and hospitable people. Unfortunately, most the other 0.01% are heavily armed thugs who could kill you for toilet paper.

*opinion of a Saffa who has been out of Africa for 14 years.

  • I have trouble riding a bicycle across Surrey.

This is true, I've seen it for myself

  • Zim is beautiful. Lots of stunning countryside. It's often urban areas where you would get more hassle anyway.
A couple of mates toured Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia about five years ago, camping out and all. They didn't get murdered or killed, and had a lovely time.

  • I spent a month tanzania many moons ago, it was a truly great country. African hospitality and the generosity is truly mindblowing for us and our cold selfish ways. You'll love it.

    +1000

nice sentiments skully i found exactly the same

  • Speaking of Zim, a friend has to get a laptop to someone there (I know, this is sounding like one of those emails...). Any suggestions?

Having spent the best part of 9 years in southern Africa, I can vouch for this. Be sensible, be aware, don't expect border crossings to take less than a full day, and you'll have a fantastic time.
