  • Hey,

just wanted some advice on which bike shops to visit in Oxford, i'm visiting my folks this weekend and need to get a new sprocket put on my rear wheel as i dont have the tools to do it myself. I've been to cyclo analysts before and they haven't been particularily helpful in the past, so please suggestions are welcome!

    cheers folks

  • I used to work at Oxford Cycle Workshop.
    They rock.

  • you only need a lock ring tool mind.

just buy a pedros trixie or similar to get the lock ring off first.

    that'll get the sprocket off.
    done.

  • I used to work at Oxford Cycle Workshop.
    They rock.

    this is true.

  • where abouts is the Oxford Cycle Workshop?

  • Oxford somewhere

  • thanks, just found it on t'interweb!

  • where abouts is the Oxford Cycle Workshop?
Magdalen Rd. They seemed nice enough in there, and sounded like they know what they are talking about.
Warlands is also a good shout. It's on Botley Rd, not far from the train station.

  • Yep OCW does officially rock!

  • i ended up going to OCW and it was really good, small but perfectly formed and out of the 5 bike shops i tried they were the only ones to have lock rings in stock.

  • Could've tried Beeline. Jason and his team there really know their stuff. Top of Cowley Rd near the roundabout at MCS. Best bike shop in Oxford by far (and I've tried them all I reckon).

  • You've tried the m all and yet agree that you haven't been to ocw?
Then you haven't tried them all.

  • i went to beeline and they said they dont stock lock rings despite stocking fg/ss bikes however they are very good normally but my preference having recently discovered it would be ocw.

  • Depends what you want... Beeline for fancy pants carbon, OCW for fixed and steel.

  • ...and Warlands, they be good.

  • a bike shop is a bike shop
it's not like a fixed is something that most bike shops have never seen before

  • OCW gets another vote as a good source of parts for old school bikes and a bunch of friendly and knowledgeable people.

Another cheaper shop to consider if you need some small bits and pieces or just cheap parts for a banger bike is cycle king. I know it's a trashy place with some staff members not knowing very basic things, shop that sells shity 30kg heavy tractor-bike mutants but they do have some good cheap small bits. When i was going to oxford for work ( i live in reading) i used to buy chain halflinks for 80p each, single chainring bolts for 4 quid per pack of 5, cheap wienmann brake levers that were good and only costed 2 quid each, some nice and cheap brake cables, ferules and other bie mechanics consumables. they also did have some cheap tools that still haven't broken after a couple of years use.

Disclaimer: I am in no way associated or connected with either of the shops mentioned.

  • A real huge shame that OCW will cease to exist as a shop at the end of the month (closes on 27th, I think). Still doing all the other good shit though: members' nights, training, recycling, educating...

  • Oh no! I didn't know that!

  • These guys http://www.facebook.com/TheCycleCentre on Walton St know what there doing. Friendly and not patronizing which is nice when I go in asking stupid questions.

  • Yep. Can vouch for that Bird! Thanks for the use of the workshop by the way!

  • Hey Guys,

New to the Oxford forum here. I was just wondering - I'm planning to get some wheels built for my first fixed build but thought I'd see if you have any recommendations? I was thinking of using Bike Zone for convenience but have mixed feelings about them sometimes. Any advice?

  • I've had decent wheels built at summertown cycles and beeline

    • not that cheap though
  • I've only used Walton Street cycles for a wheel build (my existing hub, new rim). They did a very good job, and were a good £30 cheaper than the quote I got from Summertown cycles.
