  • I would like to build a simple, very strong, fairly light, single speed MTB which i can use to jump down steps and ride some not too technical downhills and trails, as well as general dicking around like I used to on my BMX.

I weigh 14 stone and I'm 6'2" so I want a pretty solid frame, once I've sorted out the frame everything else should fall into place (I hope) i've been looking at the following:

    24 bicycles porn king 3

    Cotic Simple

    NS surge or suburban

    Tonic fabrications fall guy

    Nicolai BMXTB

    Orange p7 one

In terms of forks I want 100 or 120 mm travel with lockout, should I go oil and coil for strength and plushness or air for lower weight?

    any advice appreciated!

  • Because it's a single speed forum, and I respect the opinion of many of the people on here, some of whom are friends? Thanks for the links...

  • pix goddammit

  • I have a 24seven v24 dark angel, (usually) I run it single speed, sometimes I put it's gears back on. I'm 6', 12st and incredibly clumsy and I've never had a problem with it. You can pick up the frame for cheap too on ebay if you look around. When it's single speed it's pretty much a slacker really, but bizarrely I like the option of swapping it out. Frame has horizontal drop outs obv.
I have sherman forks on mine at the moment and am pretty happy with them.

  • get the Prince Albert

  • I ride an NS Majesty which I love. You're welcome to give it a go if you like, though the gearing is a lot lower than you'll be wanting and it's rigid up front.

The Sub is a damned good choice.

Can't say I've ever ridden the others but people in the know seem to think the fallguy is one of the best frames on the market. Damned pretty too.

I've only dabbled in suspension forks twice and regretted it both time so you'll want to be seeking opinion from others for that (Though I have some Marzocchi DJ3 forks which you can have if you want them).

  • get the Prince Albert

Too painful, and converting it back would just leave me scarred

  • check out the NS Bikes thread
i recently built up a sub 26", it is a brilliant bike
geo is perfect with rigid straight fork can't advise what the geo is like with sus forks on
NS are still relatively cheap frames compares to some 600 - 700 frame you can buy and it feels as solid as a rock

  • Do you want to but my 24?

It's a Le toy 4, Z1 drop offs, hope pro 2's laced to atom lab rims, profile cranks, hope discs (f+rr) with goodridge metal hoses, azonic post, stem and bars.

    Fucking bomb proof.

  • i'd love to test that saying right now.

    Nice build there

+1 Love these frames and if you can get them trade.... They pretty much cost nothing.

  • MTB's Max's area of expert-tease.

  • Not funny. Lots of my friends are into SS jump bikes and would show you a trick or two!

  • I got an azonic steelhead of ebay for thirty quid - its tough but heavy. I reckon SS jump bikes are the cheapest to build up at the mo, i've seen fully built dmrs go for under 150 quid on evilbay.

  • This man rides an NS Suburban and is the best mechanic I know.

My girlfriend is a buyer of handbags for a very large department store but it doesn't mean I know dick all about the latest Birkin from Hermes*.

My mate is a rigger who was responsible for hanging the 2 planes in the Tata Britain but that doesn't mean I could string up a fucking plane from your ceiling.

*Opps, prehaps I know more than I should.

  • Point is, I know enough about them to recommend them. :-)

  • Rightyo, as long as we cleared that up then.

  • Love ya, uncle Tim.

  • I think my major choice needs to come down to 26 vs 24 what are the differences? As far as I can see it:

26" more rim/tyre choices, heavier, roll better

24" more maneuverable, lighter, shorter wheelbase, not so good off road

Any thing else, am I mistaken?

  • I'd go 24" for a street bike, as it would be a BMX for me.

    26" for MTBing.

  • My Azonic (and many other jump bikes) work for 26 and 24 inch wheels. Not at the same time though.

  • Low pro jump bike!
