Velodromes in England

  • Basically was just wondering where abouts any velodromes where in England, would love to have a go on/ watch some races on one some time. I live in the somerset so if anyone knows any particularly around there that'd be ace..

  • Reading
    Herne Hill
    Portsmouth
    Southampton
    Calshot
    Halesowen

There's an indoor in Newport, Wales.

  • Herne Hill is bad ass.

  • Gypsies Green in South Shields.

Though it's not in the best state of repair and you'd be best sweeping it for glass before going on. It is just sitting there, doors open to the public though and every time I've gone to use it, it's been deserted. Also, it's hardly in the best location since ever time I've been there's been a big wind coming in off the sea.

  • That sounds fun. You wouldn't get the most out of a deserted velodrome though, especially if your new to track.

  • A bit further away is the national cycling centre in Manchester. You can hire bikes and equipment if you need to.

  • ISTR there's one near Mansfield.

    Herne Hill is cool.

    Calshot is insane.

    Manchester is amazing.

Leicester would be great if it were still there.

  • Used to have one just around the corner from where I grew up. We used to use it for our junior school sports days (had to run around it and all sorts - not easy when you're the fat kid!)

Sadly, Coventry Rugby club bought the ground (which was in pretty poor repair to be honest) and flattened it, turning it into a rugby field :(

Always made me chuckle - it was called The Butts Stadium :)

  • The indoor one at Newport has to be your best bet for Somerset - especially now that the outdoor session is coming to an end. It also has an outdoor cycle speedway track (and a cool transporter bridge nearby).

I used to play on Gypsies Green banking years ago on MTBs. I heard the retaining wall had been demolished to stop people using it - rather a shame...

  • yeah, riding Newport is like dying and going to heaven.

  • Glasgow is getting one - yay! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7570483.stm

    Sorry, Scottish

  • Lol, Edinburgh already has a legendary track. Not nice to fall off on though if you're afraid of splinters.

  • Yeah wouldnt mind giving Newport a bash. Don't suppose anyone knows the fee's for using it, public use etc?

  • does anyone know if you can still ride the Meadowbank one in Edinburgh? All I can find online is stuff about how it's going to be demolished.

  • Newport is £8 to hire a bike - unless yours is track worthy that is.
It'll be under £10 for an 'open' session.
Also you need an accreditation card if you do an open session. You don't need it if a club has hired the track.

  • It's odd nobody has thought of this before.

  • There used to be one in Nottingham (Harvey Hadden) but they cut a section out for the running track.
