Hi everyone.
I'm starting at Uni next month and my main way of travelling about is definitely going to be by bike.
I have a freeride mountainbike but that will, for the most part, stay locked up at the halls except for when I go out on rides.
The rest of the time commuting about and just for general riding I have dug out my Dad's old road bike from the 80's
I'm good at fixing mountainbikes but recognise I am out of my depth with this project and I'm sure people will have loads of helpful tips to get it running well whilst still looking for want of a better phrase, like a piece of crap that noone would try and steal. -

Search on here for relevant threads, but its pretty simple - also read this (applies to SS as much as fixed)

Some photos of the bike here.
I'm new to this forum and thus cant work out the embedding yet, but give me time OK ;p -

a piece of crap that noone would try and steal.
Tip #1: making this FG/SS will make it roughly 5x as appealing to thieves. Just make sure you get decent locks if you're in London

Leave it as it is, and just don't change gear = hey presto, you have a single speed bike.

OK Thanks, I'm not going to change the wheels so I'll just take off the mech and shorten the chain. Bought some new tyres for it today, much needed.
Out of interest has anyone heard of "1st Champion" bikes before? I know its nothing special but I wondered if it has any sort of pedigree at all. -

"Let me Google that for you" isnt big or clever. I came on this site knowing that I didnt know much about road bikes but hoping that people much more learned than me would be happy to help me.
Although sometimes this is the case, it seems more-often-than-not I end up getting patronised by the more established members of the community who gang up in their little social groups and look down on me. It kind of crushes my enthusiasm a bit. Also, if you looked at that Google search as I have already done in the past you would see that there is no info on 1st Champion bikes. Google is not the be all and end all for finding out stuff. I'd much rather talk to some people who know about these things, than use a search engine which bombardes me we largely useless information.
Rant over, sorry.

point is that if you weren't the n'th tool to come on here wanting help with his fixed conversion plan - help that he wouldn't need if he was interested enough to actually do a bit of research himself - research that could be done in its entirety pretty much on this forum - people wouldn't treat you like one.
getting all cuntish and offended by it doesn't help either.

I keep reading this as
Turning a knackered 80's road bike into ASS students bike
judging by your petulant rant it is probably the best way to read it

OK sorry but I really wasnt trying to sound as if I was just ranting mindlessly. It seems I have got off on the wrong foot with this whole forum and I would rather delete this thread and start afresh.

James - go back into the dark room and take some deep breaths.
cranxworks, spend a little time searching around this forum. There is plenty of great stuff. When you have found it and done your bike; write up what you did and how you did it to help others. Come to drinks.

I'd leave as is, decent bike and not to flash for scallys, maybe take off light bit attachment and tidy up a wee bit, new tyres that kind of thing.
have a good read of sheldon for background reading and this forum has loads of info if you want to go single speed.
