Cycling to Music Festivals

  • Just managed to bag myself a ticket to Bestival next week.
Thought it would be fun to cycle to as you can take bikes on the ferry to the isle of wight for free.

Was wondering, do music festivals allow bikes in the lock up tents usually?
If not i guess will leave in my tent porch self-locked.

  • Glastonbury just introduced bike locking facilities this year so I wouldn't guarantee it.

  • chopside cycled to Galstonbury a couple of years ago. Search fot his thread to find out what he did.

  • at reading you werent allowed to bring bikes into the festival site, as i had planned on doing the same, and i'd think bestival is possibly more similiar to reading than glasto
send someone an email asking about it

  • latitude is massively bike friendly.
reading is bike friendly in the production areas.

  • Get in touch with the organisers...a lot of festivals are trying to position themselves as eco friendly so they are likely to be open to the idea

  • the only one that is serious about it, friends recently did bike to Big Chill, said on web 'yeah come on ride' was a joke when they got there--no proper provision at all.
we took 30 riders from Bristol to Leicestershire, camped along the way 2 nights, it rocked --- even though they got soaked in the day, the pub was warm at night
other rides went from Sheffield, Derby, etc

contact them for full details of carbon footprint,
they won 'most sustainable event in the u.k' NOEA award 2009

  • at the vintage festival, there were loads of people riding around on bikes

  • There were a couple riding around camp bestival a few weeks ago. Didn't notice any lock ups there though.

Looked on the Bestival website, but its a multi coloured abomination which i couldn't find a contact email.

Searched a forum which says there are bike lock up points at the entrance of the park, so at least there will be some metal to attach my bike to if i'm not allowed it in with it.

  • probably in case it was an IED or they thought people might use them as weapons/blow them up

at reading you werent allowed to bring bikes into the festival site

did you cycle to Latitude Joe? or is that just based on observation?

I like Latitude a lot (went for the first three years) but couldn't bring myself to pay the ticket price this year.

    latitude is massively bike friendly.

  • Currently planning to cycle to Bestival. I'm hoping to get my bike inside the site but if not I'll take enough locking malarkey to ensure it stays put.

  • Don't get blotto'd and loose your bikes. Been there, done that - bad deal!

  • went to the isle of wight fest a few years back on bike with the missus...no real facilities, we just took some heavyweight locks, more than one each, and locked bikes on a fence right near the security men on't gates. other people did same. bikes were still there at 1am when we cycled back to our b&b. both bikes were vintage ones so no flashy carbon or mtb's.
