I just spoke to a WPC at the scene - cyclist and HGV were both right-turning off Deptford Broadway into Deptford Church Street. Mercifully, it's not a fatality - all I could find out was ''leg injuries.''

Spoke to the PC at the scene for a while. It was a girl and *apparently *she ran the red light. PC said the girl was doing ok.

Hmm, different PC, different story. If she ran the red light then the HGV did too, just before it ran her down. It takes 2 to right-hook - if they're both moving they've either both jumped the lights or lights had nothing at all to do with it.

I am always suspicious of Police telling another cyclist at the scene 'Oh yeah well the cyclist ran a red light' it feels like a knee-jerk 'I'm going to try to pressure this cyclist about red lights'...
Maybe she did. Seems to me if the police officer really knew that was the case it's unlikely they would disclose that to anyone not directly concerned.
Hope the cyclist lives to see another day and isn't permanently maimed by this.

Yep, here's to hoping she's going to be okay.

Do you mean from Deptford Bridge into Deptford Church Street?

Yes, you're right, Oliver. The Broadway starts just over the junction - I've lived around here for 40-odd years, which evidently is enough to forget the actual road names...

I wasn't sure whether the Broadway might have reached some way across the junction, which can happen when junctions are widened and old road names retained. Also, it could be that the Broadway just has the stronger identity and overwhelms the presence of Deptford Bridge, especially in a local's 'felt' view of the area. I'm only going by maps.

Both turning right and she ran a red light....??

driver could have got through on amber and she could have flown through on the red and caught up. if memory serves correct the right turning traffic is filtered so there is no waiting for oncoming traffic to clear the way. but i'm speculating and for this i apologise.

And also this--I had to re-learn this recently when I reported a friend's account of the crash in Graham Road. My friend had heard it from police officers at the scene that the victim had died. In fact, she died much later in hospital. Had it been me at the scene, I wouldn't have reported it, but I did because it came at one remove. I knew it before and won't forget it again.

Agree with you Ben- PC could well having been trying to have a dig... he looked bored and not impressed at my lack of head gear.
Those lights are rubbish- especially for pedestrians, as there are no crossing lights. A good mate of mine hit someone crossing a while back.
The only thing I thought is if she jumped the light from Brookmill road and he swung out from the filter. Sometimes you get twats who end up in traffic in the middle of that junction, so she could have been on the wrong side cutting through traffic.
What remained of the bike was under the rear wheels, which would clarify them both turning right though and her getting caught as he swung out.
Speculation speculation.
just been informed of an accident involving a cyclist on deptford bridge london se8. the police have blocked off the area and the bicycle is still under the large vehicle. sorry i don't have any other details.
hope the rider is okay.
