Mounting brakes?

Posted on
  • Hey, when mounting brake calipers does the serrated washer always sit directly between the caliper and the frame / fork so it grips the paint to stop the caliper from slipping sideways or does it always sit against a washer of some sort so it doesn't actually touch the paint?

Does anyone know what the hell I'm talking about? Cheers :)

  • On all the brakes I remember fiddling with, the serrated washer was against the frame. Most forks seem to have the indentations where the serrated washer has marked them.

  • against the frame/fork.as i understand itits to stop the caliper rotating around the bolt. so once its all nice and tight and centred properly, it doesnt wiggle out of plcae and have one pad hit before the other or constantly rubbing.

  • Thanks gents, helpful advice :)

  • you're welcome.

  • ...and don't forget to grease the outer side of the incasso nut (or the hole in the frame/forks) :)

  • Hi there I'm currently making my first fixed wheel bike, do I need a front brake? Or is the transition simple?

  • Yes

  • Yes

    That's clear. Any more questions?

  • It's not a transition, it's a choice.
Just because you ride fixed, doesn't mean you should go brakeless. Quite the opposite, wait until you;ve been riding for a few years if you ever go brakeless. I know I never will

  • I meant the transition to fixed wheel but thanks. I was more concerned about whether a front brake is needed or not?

  • yes
