  • Hi All,

i am looking for a fellow LFGSS memeber to help me with my road bike.

i am having some issues with my gearing...... chain making contact with front derailler and not being able to change down to the lower ring.

before i take the bike to a store for them to look at and pull my pants down with extreme costs i was looking to see if anyone could assist here.

i am willing to sort out the helper with some cash or some beers.

any help or assistance much welcomed!

    thanks for your time.

  • Sounds like the cable's stretched a bit. For a quick fix you can try tweaking the cable tensioners (found along the length of the cable. Look a bit like this: http://www.fatbirds.co.uk/images/Ritchey_Cable_Tension_Barell_Adjusters_thumb.jpg

  • fi you can make it to tottenham i'll check it out for ya.

  • Hmm, if its having problems dropping down, I would suggest that it isn't down to cable stretch or tension, more so to do with being setup or fitted at the wrong angle. Make sure that the cage is sitting parallel to the chainrings, and that the limit screws are set correctly.

Drop it past SE1 if you need a hand!

  • thanks guys, i am based in e3 and work ec3n (city) so se1 is close.

with regards to setting the limit screws correctly how do i know when there correct?

  • from the shifter place the bike in it's lowest gear (big rear small front).

undo the cable clamp on the front mech.

Make sure the front mech is parallel to chainrings, make sure your barrel adjuster on shifter or cable stop on down tube is screwed all the way in then un-screw it about 2 turns.

adjust the lower limit screw so that there is about 2 mm of clearance between the chain and the rear mech on the frame side.

re-clamp the cable so pulling though slack, but not so much that it's super tight. Clamp cable.

Now tweak barrel adjuster at shifter or cable stop to fine tune front mech.

  • What's the shifter? There are a couple of threads about some dodgy 105 STI units that were supplied on new 2009 bikes that had to be replaced. Mine broke first time I used. Got stuck on small ring with no upshifting possible.

  • If the gears have worked ever, then you shouldn't need to mess with the limit screws and cable tension is the most likely culprit.

If you're setting something up from scratch, do the limit screws before the cable tension.

  • Oh, and it's also possible that the derailleur has slipped down and turned a little.

  • thanks guys........ i will have a pop at this myself - if that fails i may be calling on your help james!

    thanks again.
