  • Bike now sold

I've got a Raleigh Clubman that I bought in 1980s, it has been hanging up in my garage under a dust sheet for the last 20 odd years. It has hardly been used, is in very good condition, even the tyres look like new. It's a standard bike as sold in 19080s the only changes being a dynamo (which a buyer would probably remove quite easily, remember we didn't have LEDs in those days!) and I put an alloy rack on the back.
It's got Campag 980 mech and shifters, 12 speed, shifters on the down tube, Weinman centre pull brakes, nice fluted saddle tube and original saddle (a sort of suede or similar).
It is a big frame 60cm , I think, which means you need a 32 inch or more inside leg to ride it.
I'm asking around £250, which is possibly a bit of a bargain but this reflects the fact that delivery collection could be a bit of a pain as I'm based in the midlands but could deliver/collect west of London/M25 area as I go down there fairly requently.

The following pictures were taken without even cleaning the bike and show it's hardly been used.

I originally posted on the end of someone elses posting about these bikes to get an idea of what they were going for (so if you're getting deja-vu that's why!)

  • Lovely bike, beautiful colour, I'd rather spend 250 on this than a new bike!
    Good luck with the sale.

  • I have this bike same size stripped down to a single speed what a lovely ride, you will be hard pressed to find a nicer riding frame for commuting on. good luck

  • if i had the cash...
    nice.

  • my girlfriend got the exact lady version of this, very tempting to make a couple out of them

  • ...and i like the dynamo lights... never going to ride in the dark having forgotten to take lights with those

  • Go on then, make me an offer- it's a stunningly good bike.

still tempting, but no need for a 4th bike and monies more needed elsewhere

someone should grab it though, on an asap basis

  • sorry this hasn't gone yet - honestly, if I had the cash...

Yep, me too! Guess I'll either try eBay or just put it back under wraps in the garage for a while.

  • Maybe put it on gumtree or some other forums before ebay.

I find it hard to believe someone won't buy this delivered for £250. I guess the only problem is its quite big.

i totally agree - i also have a clubman in almost pristine factory condition (only ever done about 100 miles, i believe, but slightly rusted in storage) but a little smaller - something like a 57cm (is that 22.5 inches?). i was going to put it up for sale at a higher price than yours, but i guess i'll be hanging on to it for a while now...

good luck with the sale, and happy bump :-)

Thanks for all the bumps guys, I've had a fair amount of interest but not from people tall enough! Certainly you've all given this a good airing- thanks a lot.

  • Sadly I am the right size but don't have the money at the moment. Might be interested in September if it's still around then.

  • Looks like it will be still in my garage later this year so PM me if you are interested anytime over the next few months.

  • Hi Jay, I'm definitely interested in buying this beautiful bike, it's just what I'm looking for at 6'3" tall. I signed up to the forum just to contact you about it, hope that's OK with you. Is it still for sale?

Yep it's still for sale, there's obviously not enough tall people about! I don't seem to be able to send you a PM, maybe that's because you've only just signed up to the forum. I think Private Messages don't work until a day or so after you've jouned up and also after you've posted a few times. So anything else I can tell you about the bike just ask on here for now. Where about's in the country are you? I'm off out on a job right now but will be back this evening.

  • Yeah, think I need to post a couple more messages before I can use PM. How tall are you? At the moment I'm riding a shite 23" hybrid which fits pretty well. My inside leg is around 35.5" using the book method. I live in Camden Town but wouldn't mind a trip out to west London to collect. Are the tyres starting to perish or do they look in good nick?

  • I am 6'1" with 32 " inside leg and if I was any shorter the bike would be too big (it's verging on too big for me). I can just flat foot it with both feet while straddling the cross-bar and I used to ride it with only a couple of inches of the saddle tube showing. It's either a 23.5" or even a 25" (they are the two larger sizes Raleigh did in the clubman), I measured 60cm from middle of BB to middle of top tube as it meets the saddle tube. The tyres are as old as the bike so I can't garantee they will be OK but they don't look perished, if I didn't know how old they are I would think they were fine and they do hold the pressure. The bike has been kept hung up and covered in a dust sheet in a dark-ish garage so there's a good chance the tyres are OK but at 28 years old I think I'd change them. If you need me to measure the frame more exactly let me know

Here's a couple of close ups of the tyres which will give you an idea of what they are like:-

  • I have my saddle set to about 43", would it go that high? I know seat posts were much shorter than they are now. Looks like this could work out!

  • Sorry, been out all day and only just seen your posting. The seat tube is much shorter than modern bikes but will still give you about the same seat height. I've just extended the seat tube to where it indicates the max. hieght should be and this gives a seat height of 42-43 inches as measured vertivcally from the ground. I attach a photo so you can see what I mean. I should say you'd be reasonably safe extending the seat tube an inch over the recommended max but that's really up to you. Let me know what you think, but it looks like it would be OK for you.
