Measuring a quill stems length

  • OK this may be a stupid question but I searched to no avail...

When measuring a quill stem am I looking at end to end or center of the steerer bolt to center of clamp?

    Thank you.

  • Centre to centre

  • Cheers Joe!

  • And parallel with the extension (or how do you call it).
    So, not necessarily horizontally.
If you have a regular stem of 73 degrees, it's (almost) horizontal for most of the bikes.
But in case the angle is different, you will have a length that is totally different.

  • believe nitto measure theirs slightly differently. I think the number they quote is reach not extension?

yep, I notice that their stem tend to be 1cm longer than the claimed measurment.

like a Pearl 9 is actually 100mm long rather than 90mm long, think they measure it centre to top than centre to centre.
