Carbon Steerer?

Posted on
  • Just bought a set of carbon forks for a new fast/stealth build, never had any carbon parts before and was surprised to find the forks rattled when I picked them up. Looking inside I found some kind of plug which I could slide in/out, and below the plug was some threaded thing that was sliding up and down in the steerer. Please could someone explain what these bits are for?! See pics attatched..

  • You can't use the traditional 'star fangled nut' that is hammered into steel/alloy threadless steerers, instead you have to use an expanding bung for the top cap screw to thread into - what you show in the pics is part but not all of said bung. You will need a complete one to use the fork - DO NOT under any circumstances try and fit the type that you have to hammer in.

  • ^ what he said. You need one of these
