Here are some things that need suggestions, so that they can be resolved.
Monthly competitiom, or fortnightly? (I think fortnightly is too often, but welcome your views)
Images based on a theme, or just the best image submitted that month.....with no chosen theme?
1 photo submission per category per person, or more?
Who could/would examine EXIF data?
Would EXIF data only be analyzed for short-listed images, all images, or the winner's image?
Who would be the judges?
What criteria would the judging be based on?
What photographic experience would/should the judges have?
What prizes could there be? (I'm attempting to get feedback from 3 national companies)
Should there be a prize, or just forumenger praise?
What should be done with the winner's image?
What should be done with a year of winner's images?
Should image entries have to be new, or could they be from someone's older saved images?
And now, over to you..............

Here goes a strawman based on GA2G's suggestion:
- Monthly - fortnightly too much effort to manage
- Photo must have a connection either to bikes (the pedal variety) OR london, and the connection should be summarised in a maximum 20 word caption that accompanies each pic.
- All pictures to be captioned with date and subject content (see above).
- 1 photo per person (the thread will get massive otherwise, and threads for other fav pics exist if you wanna post them, this for the best of the best.....), no cheating with multiple identities, or a public flaying will ensue.
- EXIF data to be analysed by the judges only of the first/second/third prizes - note you're NOT allowed to "Dick with the Pic", in any shape or form other than what is available within the camera itself (feck knows if this is realistic, but it's a hope....)
- Criteria based on a 'nice-snap', relevance, composition, technical stuff and er possible extra points for news worthyness... but mostly... a 'nice snap'. Acid test, would it sell as a postcard/wall hanging/T shirt to Mrs Miggins of Acia Avenue. That way you could give each pic marks out of 100 (25 each sub catogry plus a few extra if you wanted to for newsworthyness). The latter element I flag up as we're all around and about (mostly) London, the greatest City in the world... we want to encourage people to take pics of stuff that's going on, and happening.... and show us stuff we've never seen before. Great example the other day of the inside of the Olympic stadium at night... don't ask how they got in, but some great snaps when they did.
- Judges - strewth, here's a can of worms.... I'm an x-news pic editor, but do I qualify as that was 15 years ago, do professional photog's qualify, what about Mrs Miggins above? I suspect it could end up being 'usual suspects' if they can bullshit a photog background that the forum's happy with.
- Prizes - apple pie or crumble, simples. First prize would obviously be pie, crumble always second.
- Exhibition of 12 months worth of pics/or runnning exhibtion at any of the forum's fav. cafes/watering holes according to someone being able to chip in some dough to pay for the printing.
- Copyright remains with photographer, fair usage applies within the spirit of the forum, and anyone who gets arsey about this will look like an idiot having posted the pic in the public domain in the first place.
- Postings by the last day of each month to qualify for that month, photos to be taken in that month. No old pics, we are new, we are young(ish) we are the future.... er, etc.
Just a few thoughts.... go on... rip'em apart :-)
- Monthly - fortnightly too much effort to manage

i think the link or intreptation of the competition theme should be quite relaxed so that the general mood of the thread is not overun with pics of any particular thing. the competition should be a little bonus and lesson in good photography.

Why not start a gmail account to email the photos to and then a flickr acount and voting by forum peeps. No one to say which photo is their photo. If it comes out the photo is removed.
Would say a theme that the winner picks, no photochop and must list the phone details.
How about that? The images allways remain property of the takers and permission top use elsde where must be obtained.

I can change EXIF data.

So can I, but its the spirit

EXIF can be changed, but considering it a Mobile phone comp i doubt anyone will be judged on aperture shutter speed etc.
I suggested it as a means of giving info on the pic like the model of phone the MPs etc. And of course to show that it was from google images.I doubt anyone will go to these lengths http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Strange-News/Wildlife-Photographer-Of-The-Year-Stripped-Of-Prize-For-Faking-Shot-Of-Wolf/Article/201001315532587
I would be interested in a similar comp for digi / SLRs.

too many rules. a theme is maybe fine, but there was some quality on the thread awhile ago and I don't see why it should be limited. but my rules would be something like...
people nominate 1 favourite photo from the thread. not their own. maybe 10 most nominations get to a shortlist which then gets voted on. winner gets a spokecard/printed image of previous winner or some such, like spokecard. like bagheera's exhibition idea too. judges? fine for experienced people to judge, but these are phone photos and hence I think heavy critiques and technical judging merits are overboard. IMHO.
I like the idea.

sorry for the hijack...
anyone else interested in this? bicyleimages might consider sponsoring a monthly competition -
• #13
Was hoping you'd offer to be one of the judges here fred. :(
-
• #14
I'm honoured - sure, why not
-
• #15
Cheers me dear. Okay, fred is the first selected judge (based on ability and knowledge).
One down, and just a few more to go.
I'm going to make some decisions, as our communistic debating may take a fair while.
But I'll be mindful of all forumenger suggestions.

Okay, I asked for 2 weeks, and that time has now been reached.
There are 3 judges [fred, photoben, MrSmyth], with one alternate [Guerillaphoto]. The alternate will assist in judging an entry by one or more of the judges.
The competition will be monthly.
One entry per person, per theme. At this stage, I'd like theme suggestions please.....keeping in mind that they need to be accessible to our forum members - winter scenes in the artic circle are not on....though winter scenes may come under "Weather"...for example.
I'll be back later with my own theme suggestions.

could we have pictures inspired by or in the style of a famous photographer past or present. that person to be decided beforehand by the judges. please.
-

Difficult to do from a mobile phone, but certainly a challenge.
I'm a little bit lukewarm on the idea, as apeing another's style though complimentary seems a tad derivative, and therefore somehow lacking in spontaneity and originality. It would definitely be a challenge of any snapper's skills though.
I was thinking along the lines of original interpretations of the themes, and the differences being how the person's skill, or personality shone through. Or both.
It would be a contest of skill versus vision, versus technical ability. It would be up to the judges to decide the weighting of each factor. For me, vision would get a lot of the weighting. After all its the finished product that must impress.
Also, as has been said earlier, some are not skilled in image editing, so I think in fairness, some sort of weighting could apply here also.

How about we discuss this for one week, then launch the competition on September 1st?
-
• #21
not apeing just doing what we inadvertently do anyway, we get inspired. every now and again to pay homage and by virtue of this teach philistines like myself a little something cant be a bad thing,,surely.
also if you have 40 seconds or so to take a picture so many influences can creep in anyway. -

Sunsets. I reckon there should be a sunset competition. ;)

Do the winter scenes still count as 'Weather' if it's not actually snowing?

anyone in particular?
i really have no idea, that's what i am hoping to get out of it. i only know the names of a few photographers (less than i can count on one hand) and think it would be nice to know about more. win, win.
Discuss here. Ideas welcome.
