What diameter pipe exactly Dan?
I am sooooooo fucking close to buying a few metres and knocking them out if this is the going rate.

@ citygent - i don't know, you'd have to speak to crack fox directly. i think a few london players are using his heads already.
@ void - i don't know the diameter. it's yellow and is used for gas apparently, if that helps. harvey adds value by lathing caps and gluing (or maybe welding, i don't know) them into one or both ends of the pipe for extra shooting prowess. i reckon if you want to buy pipe you'd actually lose money. if you could otherwise liberate pipe and think of a way to get decent quality caps in the end, you may be onto something. although i doubt very much that harvey makes much, if any, money on the heads.

also, i'm desperate for yellow pipe and can't find any despite my old man being 'in the trade' (albeit behind a desk). desperate enough that i paid some enterprising gentleman in scotland £3.50 for an off-cut, via ebay.

Dan, was unsure what size as there are lots of options on PE gas pipe, I can liberate it without too many sleepless nights if I find any but a better source, and it would seem a way more immediate one, would be to buy it.
So, if I assume it's 90mm, seems kind of about right, and I can get 6m for £50 without looking too hard, might be cheaper if I try harder, that's 20 x 300m lengths, or 20 foot long pieces, which at £5 each is £100. I'd make 20 mallet heads in a few hours, maybe half a day.
Just mulling it over, but we could make them here in town and even have your own design preferences incorporated. -

i think the diameter is closer to 60-70mm.
there's a lot of resistance to paying for mallet heads in the (tightass/lefty/diy) polo scene. i reckon the market is tiny, unless you have some kind of USP, like a lathe and method of making/glueing caps.
also, people like to play around with their own design - witness my cheaty mallet, so going too far is self-defeating.
sorry to piss on your party.

i've received word from harvey that he's made the mallet heads, so i'll distribute them when i get back.

when you've mashed these new heads up and you need some gas/PE pipe... I found some locally.
A plumber's merchants just around the corner from OYB has 6 metre sticks of 90mm rigid yellow pipe for £27 inc vat. If you all got together and got a metre each that's only £5 each and you'd get three heads out of a metre easy, even with Dan's sawing skills.
Beats buying short lengths on eBay, beat having them made for you, beats looking at every construction zone I cycle past for that flash of yellow...

good find pete - when i run out of the good ones i'll buy a length. most brummies like the black stuff though. i prefer a good cheater-mallet.

Plumb Center (Plumbing & Heating Merchants)

10 Sherlock Street, Birmingham, B5 6LTProbably got black pipe, they're a huge store.
I've asked Harvey aka Crack Fox from Cambridge if he would knock me up some of his nice polo heads with heat-welded endcaps. They are £5, plus postage, so probably £6-7 each, to cover his time latheing/gluing them. Made of the yellow pipe which is pretty durable (as long as you don't make such massive cutouts as mine, so close to the edge).
I'll be getting a couple, anyone else? (reply by 06/08/10)
