Choosing the right size tubular

  • I'm looking for advice on choosing the correct width tub for my recently aquired 23mm rims which I'm looking to put to good use on the track.
    Any help on this subject would be gratefully recieved.

  • That figures, I guess I should have asked whether its safe or practical to use narrower tyres as they will be used on the track. The external width is 23mm

  • Ive used 19mm tubs on standard rims before. Never had any problems with them

    makes a difference, 19-20mm works well on flatter outdoor tracks but you really want 22-23mm on the wood. Having said that, you hardly ever see people using 19mm any more even outdoors

  • 23mm is good. narrower tubs are crap on the track- high rolling resistance, poor feel etc etc.

  • I used the 19mm tubs on wooden/tarmac/concrete tracks. It was much more comfortable on smooth tracks but I didn't notice much difference on wooden tracks. I never used them for sprinting but for bunch races they were fine, not lacking in grip.

  • Not the kind of memory that tend to slip your mind, rolling a tub.... one tends to develop a lifetime enthusiasm for gluing them on in such a way that even a strong rider will curse repeatedly trying to remove a flat one, and reach for a screwdriver.....

  • Funny how when there's a crash at world class events 9 times out of 10 a tub rolls right off! Carbon rims/tape?

    I have noticed they don't stick quite as well to carbon as alu, even with the "correct" glue. I couldn't get tubs off my old cxp30s without wrecking them, they were proper stuck

    Less glue, less rolling resistance (apparently).

    My Mavic Comete, which came direct from the Beijing Olympics, had a mere smattering shellac type glue on it, almost came off in my hands, and that was how it was raced a few months before.

  • That might be true for shellac, but apparently for normal road glue more is better as far as rolling resistance goes, built up in multiple thin coats.

  • Thanks to all of you for taking the time to answer my question. I'll be using well glued 23mm tyres by the look of it.
    Any opinons on tyres? Conti or vittoria? They will be used on wood mostly. I was using conti supersonics but they are getting old and cracked and very slippery below 20mph on the banks, I'm hoping proper track tyres will feel a bit more secure.
    The rims are weinmann 906 race, they might be 22.5mm but look closer to 23, measured on my faded old ruler.

  • Shame you can't get these any more, they were lovely. Not sure I'd pay $160 BIN for something that old, there's a difference between matured and aged.

    I think I'd go for a Veloflex Roubaix for the width if I were stuck with these rims, as I have a pathological aversion to using tubulars even fractionally narrower than the rims.
