  • I want to get out of London and work in America for a bit, and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with getting a visa?

  • Absolute clusterfuck.

    Your options are
    (a) get a company to sponsor you
    (b) marry an american
    (c) go on an internship visa

  • yep. You can apply for them on line. Same as australia and most countries...3 months work permit is what you will need. , i think you have to apply for the extension when your in the country, your employer can be your sponser.

I don't think this is accurate.

OP, I recommend you get this book (or similar). This is what I used to evaluate my options when I was considering a move a few years back. It's a flippin minefield.

  • did you have any luck?

my concern is that a company wouldn't be willing to sponsor me, but i think 3 months is a good length of time get a foot in the door

  • it is accurate. I lived there. You need to do what i said. 3 months work permit and then establish a sponsor. Or you can just fuck off over there on a holiday visa, get a job, and then get your sponser. Thats what my dad did. If was there on a holiday visa. he's been a American cittazen for 25 years.

  • your welcome drew. If you go onto their goverment site you can find alot of info out. But if you apply for a work visa and you are denyed you wont be able to get a holiday visa for quite a while i believe.

  • i guess holiday visa is the way forward then, at least that way i end up with a fun trip if nothing else

  • its what i would do. Good luck with it all. You will have a great time there. America is my favorite place to go.

  • i just hope they'll let me stay for a while

    Thanks again!

  • There is no such thing as a three month work via for the usa. Also no company will employ you if you're there on a tourist visa, unless you want to work illegally for a pittance, eg washing dishes. And top to it off, the kind of place that will employ you illegally won't have the incentive, let alone financial resource, to sponsor you for a visa.

Op: no, I gave up. It's that difficult.

  • Also, if you fly in with a three month gap until your return flight, expect to get questioned to within an inch of your life by immigration. They will want to see evidence that you are able to support yourself for three months without income.

  • balls

  • Look into the internship visa (j1) - that is your best bet imo
