Tri shoes are easier to get on to reduce the length of time you take on your changeover - so big finger loop at back, only 2 big velcro straps. They possibly also will have drainage holes so that your pond water can escape (urgh).

Triathlon shoes tend to be done up, whilst on the bike. Shoes are clicked into the pedals, and the athlete runs bare foot from transition, over the start line, jumps on bike, then slips feet into shoes whilst in motion. At the end of the cycle leg, the process is reversed, with the last 100m or so ridden with the feet out of the shoes, and on top of the footwear.
Therefore tri shoes usually have bigger, wider velco fastenings, and can be more tricky to get "just right" on the foot, than a multi adjustable road shoe with three or more retaining straps.

Since others have already chipped in with sensible answers I will say only this.
They are more expensive and offer 10% increased dihydrooxynucleusfibrailation which equates to a transition time saving of 14x10-4 nanoparsecfloggles. Tri shoes are also only produced in red, as it's the fastest colour and should only be worn if the user also has a LiveStrong wrist band fitted and can maintain 4 wobbles per second for 40k.

i would say...tri shoes will more likely give you cold toes in the winter due to mostly made of mesh to allow drainage...
