  • I'm looking for a nice 1" suspension for to go on my new (OLD) hardtail. Any ideas? The closer to NOS the better, of course.

  • i think marzocchi were the last people to make 1in forks (mx-pro's from about 7 years ago) they are agricultural compared to what you can get today and possibly to long axle to crown as i presume your frame is corrected for 60-80mm?

  • Not sure, but it's a fairly safe assumption.
That's why I was hoping someone had some old judy's that I could service into use.

  • i have some mint rockshox recons for sale (oem but with the motion control damping) you just need a nice modern frame :-)

  • CRC had MZ Pro on sale in 1"

  • The story is, I can't afford another bike right now, so I've been borrowing Lincoln's Nikolai. It is sweet, but it's too big.

I complained about it to one of our customers, and he offered me this Kona for free, but the fork isn't all together that great.

If I really love mountain biking, and I've paid my bill off at work, then next year I'll think about getting a more modern MTB.

    With 11 speed Alfine.

  • What Kona is it, and what year? You might need to pick a fork very carefully or youll feck the geometry. I would recommend a pair of early bombers if you can find some and 80mm travel is ok.

  • It's an explosif (I think, it's not in my hot little hands yet, but that's what he said it was).

I have to admit that I was really hoping for something that hasn't been completely rinced out of someone's closet from a simular era. I can always service them at the shop.

They are early 90's, it has been supposed.

I'd wait and get one of these when they have some stock.

I'll check in the communal bike depot at my brothers, he has a couple of early 90s Orange's that may have what you need. Will let you know tomorrow.

  • You are an angel.

  • Wow, that second fork looks very, very, sweet.

  • Hey Nhatt,

I've got a set of old Judy XC's here if you want them. I was thinking to eventually freecycle them on here. They'll def need to be serviced and the steer tube is a bit rusty.
I can post / send some pics if you want?
I bought them back mid 90's as far as I remember..
In blue. Not baby blue tho, sorry.

  • What colour is the Explosif?

Probably a silly question, but I'm pretty sure that Konas were 1 1/8" by 1993 or so. If the Project 2s/stem are silver or gold, I'd expect them to be 1 1/8".

Standard travel for most forks around that time (i.e. to fit non-suspension correct geometry) was 63mm (2.5"). Realistically you're going to want to try and avoid any of the "high end" forks from around that time, as I'd imagine that anything involving air and oil is probably past being fixed by now. Stick to Judys/Manitous/etc.

  • What travel did the original silver Marzocchi Bomber Z3s have? There were good forks. A bloke I was talking to on the Southend ride had them on his Zaskar, said he picked them up NOS for a song I think.

  • go the whole hog and get some classic yellow quadra 21 r's for it. 12mm of plush rubber travel!

  • i'm going to go against everyone else and suggest saving your money not getting old stuff and waiting before you have £100 for a s/h newish frame and £100 for some proper forks

modern forks/brakes/frames are so much better.
a lightly used pair of rebas/recons/toras will be lighter, stiffer, and more reliable than any older fork. the main difference will be in the damping which is streets ahead and a give you a much better ride.

disk brakes. old frames have v's they are shit. set of disc deore's will be cheap (especially with shop discount) and very reliable.

if you were a bit taller i have an unbuilt medium Dialled bikes love/hate singlespeed frame/forks/brakes you could borrow for a while.

  • just out of interest MrSmyth how much do you want for the recons and what year/spec etc?

  • £100
i think they are 351's ? they are off a mates whyte 19. he rode them 1-2 times then fitted some talas he had. i had them on my giant trance for 4-5 rides before i got some bolt through revs.
they have been in my cupboard for the last year.
good points: still minty fresh, motion control damping and alloy steerer unlike some OEM forks
bad points. crown race was removed without proper tool so some marks but you wouldn't see them when new crown race fitted.

not 100% sure what travel they are either 115 or 120? you can change them by moving the all travel spacer inside. i guess i should measure the exposed stanchion when unsagged.

  • old frames have v's they are shit.

If you dont set them up properly. They are good enough for most applications.

I think Konas had 1 1/8" (threaded) steerers from MY 90 to 93, then 1" for a couple of years, then 1 1/8" (ahead) again?

  • having ridden a mtb with v's for a day in the muddy hills i certainly wouldn't go back to them after using disks.
i couldn't imagine riding loops of afan/cwmcarn/coed y brenin etc with v's. not being able to stop on the downhills and arm pump would be a mare.
i'm not into that retro old school stuff so i'll stick to 1 finger braking.

    Yes!

    Where are you based?

  • Nothing in the communal parts bin, sorry.

  • That's ok, sounds like the Judy's are just what I want...
