  • Hey,

I'm looking for a pair of wheels and could do with some advice.

London's notorious roads, 20+ miles a day, and a slightly 'heavy' style of riding means my wheels don't stay straight for very long.

My geared bike - campag set up, 10 speed - needs a new set of wheels. any recommendations that are a) strong; b) light; c) less than £200?

Moreover: hand built from a LBS or off the shelf?

  • mavic open pro, 32 holes and all the bell and whistle.

hand-built wheel is the best and most flexible option, also strength lie in the quality of the wheelbuild.

my father commute with similar wheelset, and he does do similar mileage as you did (campag groupset et all).

  • Well, handbuilt are going to be more expensive but more likely to stand up to some London abuse. Veloce hubs and open pro's? Something like that.

I'm about to get some cheap and cheerful aksiums for my Merckx as I need some wheels I don't care about so ride the crap out of.

  • Planet X model B are easy to get/cheap, not as nice as handbuilt, but still serve a purpose. Maybe a bit skimpy on spokes though if they're really gonna take a bashing?

  • The Planet X doesn't have campag specced hubs though (unless I read the wrong part).

  • It's there in the buying options, dude.

  • Pwned...

  • What the fuck is all this shit about London roads?

When you see a pot hole, steer round it you fucking clowns, this also applies to kerbs and other wheel hurting obstacles.

  • Not everybody rides as slowly as you Dov.

  • Piss off

  • Raw nerve?

  • Nah, we just joshing.

The answer to this question is Mavic Aksium, £120 off eBay. Plenty strong and decent weight training/commuting wheel.

Steering round pot-holes is also good advice.

Whilst I agree with you in principle, you clearly don't ride quite as drunk as some of us. ;)

Yeah, my thinking. I've heard the new one's tend to get a bit wonky after the first 200 miles, so make sure you keep your eye on them. Apparently completely fine after a quick session with a spoke tool

Did someone pee in your coffee this morning?

Surrey 'training' roads are worse than London 'commuting' roads.

£100 on Khamsins, £10 on spoke wrench.

    +1.

  • I'd go for handbuilts if you want something you can repair yourself. Get a pair of 36 hole hubs, something like Miche for £80, lace them 3x to a pair of decent rims, Mavic Open Pros et al, and you should have a pair of serviceable wheels that'll last.

Alternatively, I used to run a pair of Campag Ventos on my cross bike (which I also commuted on) and they were utterly bombproof. The drawback with these is, if they do go out of true, you might need professional help in truing them.

What's the Tom Ritchey quote; "Strong, light, cheap? Pick two."

  • Not much help but £33/£40 above your budget gets you Ambrosio Excursion/Evolution laced to Ambrosio hubs from wheelsmith.co.uk which includes delivery. Also, plenty of wheelbuilders on this here forum (there's a list somewhere). You could always buy the bits yourself and get someone to build them for you?

Not at all, it's just the same old crappy question followed by the same old Scoble reply. It's frighfully boring.

awwww... it'll be ok. Summer holidays start soon and there will be 400 Arroooospokkk threads...

  • Are touring (A719, A319 etc,.) rims going to be stronger than Open Pro's for those that can't steer around the potholes? Or are they just heavier because they are bigger?

Another option could be to use larger tyres if you can. A 35c lets me get away with anything on road or off road (admittedly a 35c is a very large tyre!)
