When you say too wide, do you mean (for instance) that the frame is meant for a 68, and you have a 73mm bb?
Either way, either find thread gauges and a vernier and measure, or use trial and error with this table:
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html#threading
Phil Wood (pricey though) makes a french threaded BB, as does Velo Orange if your budget is more restricted - http://www.velo-orange.com/grcrufrthbob.html
The alternative is a threadless bb, Velo Orange make one too. http://www.velo-orange.com/grcruthbobr.html People sometimes have trouble with these coming undone, a common trick, I am told is to put one or two wraps of PTFE plumbers tape on the threads before installing. I have no experience with the Velo Orange stuff, and other people make threadless BB's. Take a look around before you drop $50 + postage and customs on the VO one.

I've got a 70mm Italian threaded BB which doesn't fit in, and a 68mm English one that does, but the threading is wrong. So from Sheldon's table I guessed it must be a French one?

If uo buy a VO BB, get it from Freshtripe. I bought one off VO, and ended up paying nearly £100 for it.
As per title - bought an old Bianchi off hilary, and the italian BB he supplied is too wide to fit in the shell, and a British BB I have has the wrong threading... so I'm guessing that I need a French one. Does anyone have one? Or a suggestion of an alternative?
Thanks
