  • Do you? Would you? Prefer Gowalla? Latitude + Buzz? Waiting for Twitter or Facebook's offerings to really take shape?

Do you have any idea what I'm on about?

  • Not a clue :-S

  • lost me

  • I think I'll be using it more when I get the new phone. Though twitter now geo-tags photos so maybe they'll just expand that to all posts.

  • computerz
    what is they ?

no, but Im looking for the best way to mediate an upcoming trip to Scotland,
    where I will be doing 714 k 14, 000+ M of climbing in 7 days,
would actually appreciate this thread to discern between Twitter and all, so I can best choose the way to do updates.

  • Is this a fancy clothing brand?

  • ok, for the older generation (tongue firmly in cheek): Foursquare is a bit like Twitter, but what happens is you "check in" to places you visit. So if I'm at the local, I can check in, and Foursquare sends pings my friends saying "mattty's at the Nailgun Arms", and you can come and have a beer with me.

What's the point? It's not completely clear at the moment, but companies are beginning to use it as a marketing tool (or rather, customer retention: check into Benny's Sandwiches 5 times and they give you a free coffee kind of thing). What it will become is anyone's guess.

You want to track where you've been? A Garmin is probably still your best bet, as it's designed for the purpose. You can get applications for smartphones that will do the same thing, but the battery life will probably be quite poor.

  • nah, I want to post updates, not worried about the route, I will be living it.

still not convinced that in Ullapool, on the isle of Aran, Mull we will have interwebs access anyway, but could be fun to send some of my truncated stream of conciousness highland snapshots into the ether.

I would do it on here, but you lot are probably bored s...less of me going on about riding bikes anyway.

  • How about twitter, then have that auto-post to a blog? That way you can just snap a photo, write 140 characters of lucid prose, and it will geo-tag it and post it to a blog. If you can't get data access, you can still post to twitter (albeit text only) via SMS.

  • Nofriendsbook, Twatter, now fucksquare? Personally i just call someone if i want them to know where i am.

  • +1

yeah its looking more and more like twatter its going to be for heaps of people, work contacts, schools, more than I could personally call.

    haha

  • So if i've got this right...I will get bombarded by a constant stream of messages telling me that vague acquaintances (or 'friends') and colleagues are in a pub, or Benny's Sandwiches, or wherever the fuck?

    I think I'll pass, thanks.

  • They updated their privacy policy. I'm sure this just means more of your data will be sold off...
