  • Since putting a new chain on, the bike has developed a godawful creak/clunk. Anyone about this week fancy doing some diagnostics?

  • Can do, no problems... You will have to get to mine, and bring alcohol!

  • New chains take a while to bed in with your already worn chainring & sprocket. Also what type of chain is it directional? Chain tension.

  • No idea if it's directional, never heard of that before! Just a basic KMC 3/32 chain. Checked the tension, no tight spots and I'm running it slightly slack because that's what I thought.

PuP, I can swing by after work tonight, around 5.45 ok?

  • Gimme a call later on and we shall go from there... Did you get a pink chain?

  • Nope, a very bland metal colour chain. It'll just end up black anyway, I'm clearly not hip enough to rock coloured transmission.

  • You should have got orange... We could get ya whole bike done in orange! Chainwheel, cranks, rims etc!

  • Orange transmission = loads of cleaning! Thinking some track drops (or maybe bullhorns) might be the next update, can't afford rims for the time being.

  • Cool... Track drops are designed not to be run with hoods though, bull horns are more like riding on the hoods. I am thinking about selling my bull horns and getting some risers! Either that or another set of Deda Pista bars! (My other ones went when the fuji went walkabouts!)

  • Think it was stiff link(s). Have loosened any links that gave resistance and it seems better but not perfect. No visible stiffness as it goes round the sprocket so pretty hard to see if/where it is the problem.

  • I used motorbike chain lube on my Holdsworth for she were a noisy bitch to begin with. Silent after that more or less.

  • Yeah coz new chains are never properly lubed... Dry lube works a treat in the summer seasson, and is less messy than wet lube which is ideal for all seassons (I think that is the way!). You can pick up decent lube for about £6-£15. Only use a little bit and wipe off excess.

  • I already dry lubed it in case, I used it all year round but just have to reapply more often in wet weather. Just doesn't sound like chain noise though, should be about Weds night if you fancy a listen.

  • Cool... Holla at me!

  • New chains usually take a while to bed in, also some of the KMC ones have to be the correct way around.

  • I'm assuming that any directional chain would be clearly labelled as such. No markings to suggest any right/wrong way on mine. The noise is calming down so I reckon that's what it is.

  • I'm increasingly not lubing chains. Quick wipe down with a WD40-soaked rag. Very rarely oil now - at least on fixed. Geared bikes still get the full treatment.

  • Have developed a 'clicking' noise from somewhere. It started after my climb up Ketts Hill last night, I've tightened everything, and it only seems to happen when I put pressure on the left crank arm...

I'm thinking either pedal bearing or a BB bearing, any other ideas before I start taking things to bits?

  • I had the same problem sounds like It's something with the Bottom bracket, try and get yourself a sugino bottom bracket they will last you a while.

  • That's a very crappy BB if it's gone already. If it's pedals, you can treat yourself to some nice clippy ones!

  • They're new pedals - I'm 99% sure it's the BB. It happened right as I got to the top of Ketts Hill, so I think too much pressure through a budget BB has screwed a bearing.

  • Fsa veros right? My bearings went kapput after a load of climbing, skidding and an over taught chain. And a sugino will not do as you should need a 107 mm spindle...

  • My FSA Veros have lasted really well considering the awesome power I put through them. Still got a noise somewhere but buggered if I can work out how to reproduce it, let alone what it could be.

  • Yeah veros, the cranks are fine... any other suggestions for replacement BB? Not too pricey as I just spent enough tokens on these: http://www.mutinybikes.com/products-forks.html

  • BMX forks? Didn't realise that you rode BMX!
