a work colleague plays tennis next door to the track, she has also complained about flies causing terrible reactions.

however, the plural of anecdote is not data.

Ketamine? Are you sure Clive?

Antihistamine tablets and bite and sting cream with hydrocortisone will deal with it in a week or so. Evil bastards.

There must be a unique breed of velodrome fly, I get bitten to death in the summer at Aldersley in Wolverhampton
-
• #12
oh, the memories :-)
pure evil those things
I suggest we all chip in for an animal carcass, to keep them busy
Used plenty plenty insect repellent, but in the end, just wore long top and bottom to ride evenings

ewww! reckon they can get into your lungs!? ew.

Flies can be terrible-got bitten by a kleg when out for a ride and ended up with a weird feverish flu/chills episode the next day-felt fucking awful. Probably because they like to trot about over jobbies and dead animals then sink their teeth into you. Nice. Still, not as bad as the bee sting up the nose story.
made me want to do this and ride with it: -

So it probably was a reaction to the bite in that case. Weird chills in my body. One minute I was shivering the next I was burning up. It only completely went when the swelling went which was yesterday.
Mild poisoning then? Horrible little fuckers -

This is mad, how do the flies look?
-
• #17
With their eyes.
No, that doesn't work.

• #18
Does now!

The thing is you never see the bastards. They are proper stealth. Surprised the Americans haven't analysed them yet to make some stealth war stuff. Oh and if you do happen to catch one, you can't kill them. They have these horrid hard shells. A proper little war machine

Looks like a kind of wasp.
The world is full of fucked up wasps that do mad things like lay their eggs inside your skin and then the grubs eat your testicles. Or something.
-
• #21
is anyone actually sure what they are? My other half is a researcher in tropical medicine and has the gear to analyse the little bastards. Maybe we can identify the remedy and sell a cream
Name suggestions?

They are a bunch of cunts. Thats what they are.
Are you racing tomorrow Mike?

mike
is that what they look like?
or are they horseflies?
horseflies keep landing on my arms when road cycling, i dont think they have the anaesthetic effect of a mosquito, so you can feel the moment they dig in and then get rid of them before they do too much damage?

I have been informed that they are black flies and all the info I read about them leads me to believe that's what they are. I have only seen one once due to their stealthy nature but I'm pretty sure thats what they look like

i've been had by these little fuckers too.... got one bit on the back of the knee a while ago.... going from sitting to standing was agony..... the swelling was pretty bad too, but not as bad as you have described..... i normally take anti-histamines when i'm there anyway, as i find the pollen really gets to me, especially during the evening sessions.
Last year Gizmond had a nasty reaction to a black fly at HH. I seem to have developed the same thing. My right ankle has swollen to about twice it's normal size and I could barely walk this morning. I also feel a bit ill, not sure if it's part of the symptoms or if I am just getting a cold. Either way. It sucks and I hate those little bastards. Must remember to bring some insect repellent next time :(
