Quiet 19t cog chain combo

Posted on
  • Been shopping for a well machined 19t cog. wanted an eai superstar but they stop at 18. Are their regular ones decent/quiet or would i be better with a phil? Also any recomendations for a quiet chain to pair with it as i have decided to ditch the izumi superloudness...

  • normal eai and a kmc kool chain

  • Phormal EAI are fine (don't last as long as the superstars). The Gold KMC 710SL is super smooth (if a little pricey). You are forgetting the chairing though. This must be of similar quality.

  • or condor's better quality cogs

  • better? really?

  • I'm using a well cheap set up at the mo and it's totally silent

    Tranzmission on the back (http://www.parker-international.co.uk/14184/Tranzmission-1-8--Single-Sprocket.html)

And this cheap KMC chain (http://www.parker-international.co.uk/6104/KMC-Z510-Silver-1-8--Track-Chain.html)

    (Record Pista chainring tho...)

  • its to go with a DA chainring... preferably i would like to go pick cog and chain up today from a central london shop...

  • better? really?

I meant out of the two sorts of Condor ones they do (or used to?) the grey ones with a condor on are pretty good

  • Surly cog, Izumi np chain - pretty quiet on mine...

  • I meant out of the two sorts of Condor ones they do (or used to?) the grey ones with a condor on are pretty good

    ah, gotcha, sorry rob. :)

  • hmm mine is surly and izumi at present... has never been right but the cog was about 8 months used before i put it on this setup so might explain a bit. Are Phils worth the cash? tempted to splash on one and a new kmc chain in persuit of silence.

  • went for a phil 19t and kmc chain... all i can say is money well spent. seems that the machining and tooth shape on the phil meshes in a much smoother way than my old surly cog with flat top teeth. All i hear now is the tyres against the poor quality surface of londons roads!

  • Anybody got any info on this badboy?

    http://www.hubjub.co.uk/eai/eai.htm

Its expensive but looks lovely and I'd imaging its super quiet?

Mine is rather noisy on the back, but I think its a System X so looking to upgrade.

  • I have a silent set up with a halo 19t, cheap kmc chain and a old sugino bmx chainring.

Don't see what a more expensive cog will do decent chainline and oil are surely the answer?

  • Why do you want your drivetrain to be quiet? I like mine noisy so those fucking old ladies hear me and get out of my way when I'm on the pavement.

Very blingy, but not really worth the money unless you absolutely must have TiN. Phil is quieter and cheaper

  • I have a good (but chunky) chain with a Thorn chain ring, even with a decent amount of grease I can hear the sprocket.

I'm just after a decent quiet one. The Phil looks good btw, definitely one for the books!

    (PS. what is TiN?)

  • I run a Surly cog with a Sugino RD (basically what is stock on the old Steamrollers) and when lubed nicely runs absolutely silent. I've also slackened off the chain a fraction. That helped a lot.

  • (PS. what is TiN?)

Titanium Nitride, the gold coating on that EAI sprocket.

  • I hate to tell you this, but cogs don't make any sound.

Try shaking it, you'll see what I mean.

(also just buy a KMC silent drop chain...yes, they also come in "gold")

  • Ideally I want a silver chain and black ring on the back.

I thought the sound would be a combination of the chain and the sprocket? But because there is not sound on the front ring that lead me to thinking it must just be the rear sprocket.

Looks like ill be looking at the superstar or the phil!

    ^+1

Noisy chain/cog/sprocket, is usually down to bad chain line or lack of lube.... imo

  • Aren't some chains more noisy than others though? I'm sure there's a thread somewhere on this. I bought a new chain and it makes more noise. Also, doesn't it make a racket when the chain's too tight?
These are questions rather than statements.

#goes off to lube chain just in case.

Yes and yes, but the chain meshing onto* the sprocket is one of the things exciting the vibration, so the tooth profile can also make a difference.

*Demeshing off it really, as that's the bit that's in tension.
