Shimano SS Freewheels - Noise

Posted on
  • Hi,

I have a 18t Shimano freewheel on my Pearson Touche... it is quite noisy.. reminds me of the sort of noises Raleigh Burners and Strikers used to make...

    is this normal?
what are the alternatives? White Industries?

    ta

  • what are the alternatives?

    go fixed.

  • go fixed.

How did i know that was going to be the first reply ;-)

re fixed - been there done that - just prefer to have a freewheel..

    Si

  • speaking of noisy freewheels. picked up a road bike a while ago and can't believe how noisy it is compared to my fixed. it's almost like they make it extra noisy on purpose?

  • kboy: If it's Campag, then they all come that noisy. Easily fixed after a strip and regrease though.

  • sure is campy. I know nothing about gears, what do I strip? Just the freewheel?

  • perhaps this applies to the shimano SS one too?

  • I have to freewheels - Chinese no brand which sounds like a box of crickets and Shimano which is almost mute.
Either your one is worn out or you have sensitive ears.

I'd go for a coaster brake. It's silent, you can coast and you can skid.

    I

it is not very old - less than 500miles it has never clicked, but it has a sort of rubble - perhaps the alloy frame is amplifying transmission noise..

  • I run a bog standard Shimano MX30 and it's silent. Assuming it's not a dodgy chainline etc?

  • no all basic checks done - chainline fine, BB fine, cranks tight.

only thinki noticed is that perhaps the chainring is not quite concentric with the BB axle so chain tension varies a fraction...

my previous bike a langster had the same setup but did not make the same noise.. might speak to Pearson and see if I can exchange the freewheel to see if that makes a difference

  • kboy: Campy freewheels come apart as part of the hub service process and aren't really worth doing on their own unless it really is too loud to bear. On the other hand, get some new bearings from the LBS, a pot of grease, a couple of rags and an hour to spare and you can get it running smoothly and quietly with an adjustable spanner and a couple of cone wrenches.

  • I have a cheap dicta that is silent, it replaced another cheap dicta that was a bit loud. i have a freecoaster wheel that is super loud. I thought the louder the better. More noise + more pawls. White industries ones are used as foghorns by the coast in winter.

  • it has a sort of rubble

Did you keep your old chain when swapping the cog? I've had this before when I put on a new MX30. The old one was well eaten and the chain had probably slightly stretched along with it. Stuck a new chain on - problem solved.

no bike has only done 700miles from new.. so as yet nothing swapped - PEARSON are going to send me another shimano freewheel to try which is cool of them
