Are employers allowed to discriminate based on whether someone smokes? wow.
-
• #3
you just tell them you don't smoke
the same as when you tell them about the three masters degrees you have and the amazing organising skills that you have too
they're called white lies not real lies just lies that will not cause anyone any harmwhen i say you i don't mean you ( mattty )

no idea, they're a cancer charity though, and i know they wont hire you if you smoke!

Not really discriminating is it? It's a lifestyle choice on the part of the smoker. Not like a disability or age.
I would think that most employers would prefer non smokers as they take less breaks and have less time off sick (generally speaking)

It is discriminating - I'm using it in the literal, not pejorative sense.
-
• #7
lame.
this is an awesome job.
(I'm not a smoker, just can't do permanent). -
• #8
it rather detracts from their work as a charity to help people suffering from smoking related illness if their employees smoke, non?
-
• #9
Absolutely. Smoking is a terrible thing, and I fully support the efforts of individuals and charities who seek its cessation and provide care and support for those suffering from it's terrible side effects.
Merely expressing interest at seeing it as a requirement in a job description.

i used to work for the roy castle institute in liverpool. i smoked. i used to think it was vaguely amusing doing some work on barrett's and then nipping out for a cig.
what a tool i was. -

Religion is a lifestyle choice.
Bit of a sore subject in my workplace though:
Smokers take a 10 min smoke break every hour, then have lunch.
I just get lunch.
So I started going outside with the smokers and a pack of Polos, to have a mint break.
I was told that I couldn't take a mint break every hour.
I claimed Polo addiction.
HR are thinking about it. -

ha, i love how quickly stuff gets derailed.
come on peoples, i considered quitting my job to go forward for this!
you'll get to organise a sportive, use your imagination to organise long rides, family rides, challenges . all to raise money for a good cause.
just a side note, i wont make anything from this, apart from amybe a beer from my colleague, but i thought some people here would love it!

ed, go for it!

Religion is a lifestyle choice.
Fair point. Maybe i need a different word: Habit / addiction?
IMO, smoking is on the same level as "serious" drug addition. Not many companies let their employees out every hour to have a quick swig or to shoot up!
I work on the ground floor of our office and there are people who stand outside my window for, at least, and hour a day. They still get paid the same amount as me. Maybe more.

clearly there needs to be a smoking/ethics thread...

I should mention the deadline for this is friday lunchtime, and you will need to write a covering letter for it, but I can help with that.
-

-
• #21
Do it
-
• #22
Drat, I would love to do this. I could quit smoking for a job, but I don't think I can get fundraising experience by Friday!
-
• #23
could you afford to smoke on £18k a year?
aren't fags something like £6 a pack? -
• #24
all cvs considered, they really want a passionate cyclist for this, worst case i'll fire you back an email saying no, best case you get to ride bikes and plan bike rides for a living!
-
• #25
if you quit smoking you'll raise about ..... ( 20 fags a day 3 days before the cv is due in 20 fags = £6.50 ) wahey you've raised roughly £18
fundrasing experience TICK !
Wouldnt usually do this as a recruitment consultant but feel its one that would be of interest to peoples on here.
