• bought a new surly frame set today and this was attached to the seat post clamp...

    what is it?

  • a tube map?

  • cantilever brake hanger

  • fnck knows

  • cantilever brake hanger

    Is my guess.

  • it has a barrel adjuster, but where would it hang?

  • Which frame was it?

  • surly cross check

  • One of these:

As everyone said, a rear brake hanger.

  • problem solved, now get some brakes

  • Now, for bonus points, did you locate and keep the bolts for your dropouts?

    If you didn't, you're fucked.

    ahh cool - thanks

    what bolts for the dropouts?

  • the tiny little ones that screw into the back of your dropout and mean that you can get your axle in strait in the right place, without it slipping.

Surly attach them to a random bit of packing materiel.

    hmmn - cant find them.
    bollox.

  • they would have been on the bits attached to your rear triangle...I hope that helps. You can't get them anywhere, Ison (Surly's distributer) don't keep spares.

  • they look a bit like this, but longer

mine were taped to the rear dropouts, wrapped up in polythene

For the Surly Crosscheck only ?

  • shite - i took the frame out of the box at the shop as i was on foot and it was easier to carry. either left them in the box or lost them en route home.
not hugely bothered though - its not that hard to align an axel on horizontal dropouts

    Now that is useful.

How crazy that they don't attach it to the frame.

Ee's on t'top field, ye can't miss 'im, 'is leg's bound in polythine!

  • 'ere 'are for ya.

  • It's a miniature Davy safety lamp (minus the wick and internal oil vessel). The original Surly bicycles were deployed back in the 1800s down welsh mines as 'Surly Safety Bikes' and were used to carry the canaries that acted as methane gas leak detectors. this was due to their rugged construction (the bikes were tough too). welshmen ate a lot of leeks and farted a lot, creating gas pockets, and (i was going to explain at length why a miniature scale representation of the lamp comes to be included on each new Surly frame set but my boss has given me some work to do so it'll have to wait).

  • :)

  • ... so, as i was saying, coal mines in wales used to have 'Disco Caves' [this is in fact where the word 'disco' derives from: a conflation of the Welsh word for gloomy, 'dis' and the English (and Welsh) word for collective, 'co']. These tiny subterranean cavities, often not much larger than an English holiday home in Llandudno, were where the designated pet-handling miners took their canaries to get them acclimatised to the 240 beats-per-minute frequencies of the heavy drilling equipment, the darkness and the filthy anti-English profanities of life underground. Early gramaphone recordings of Welsh Male Voice Choirs were taken to this area and played ludicrously fast and loud in front of the gas-detecting canaries' cages. The pet-handling miners would then do skids on their Surlys and fast backward circles to startle their feathered colleagues (in much the same way police horse handlers let of fireworks and bang bin lids to prepare them for riot duty). When the birds had been 'broken in' they would be given some fudge and taken down further into the mine where they would start sniffing for gas. My boss is back, so more later...
