Sorry to resurrect this thread that's a few years old now, but I'm in a similar situation.
I'm flying to Linz in Austria from 14th July - 14th Sept and would only need a bag for the flight there and back. I don't know how often I'd end up using a bike bag afterwards so I'm not sure if it'd be worth spending that much money on buying one.
If anybody has any leads to hiring / borrowing one, I'd be highly greatful.
Thanks.

Try getting a card box from the lbs you can fly using one of them

Thanks for the very fast reply RuffStuff.
I just started to look into the cardboard box solution and it seems to be the most feasible. My only issue is handling and transport - i.e. will it fit into the bag of a car as I'll be taking a suitcase too.
Any experience with sizes of cardboard bike boxes and taxi boots / back seats (I understand all cars are different though).
Thanks.

Should fit in most cars with seats down or estate fine. Use bubblewrap to line it/ protect bike.
Other options a cheap bag from crc but they don't look like they'd offer much protection. -

Yeah, I saw those bags and thought the same - the reviews are quite mixed too.
I'll give some shops a ring about getting hold of a cardboard box. Thanks for the help!
Will probably post back in case anyone else comes across this in the future.

I'm based in Birmingham so it'll be difficult. Phoned Evans in Birmingham who said to phone them tomorrow morning when they have a delivery so fingers crossed!

Try halfrauds its surprising how many people actually let them build bikes, always piles of boxes behind my local one

iv just had a dolan frame delivered and still have the box, might just be big enough to hold a full bike. you can check it out if you want, can also measure the dimensions if itl help?
As per thread title - i need a bike bag for transporting my polo bike to geneva for the euro's.
If it's good, i'd be interested in buying. if you don't want to sell, i'd fling a bit of money/some bike bits/beer your way. if i know you, perhaps you'd just lend it to me?
