What sort of cloth are they using, can't be just tissue can it?
-

Tissue/loo roll is wrapped into the chain and old rag to wipe it down. Best to loosen off the chain a bit beforehand.
And keep fingers away from the spinning chainring/cog. Very important!!!!

Does it not just get all ripped and get stuck in the chain / around the cog?
and yeah.. don't fancy having my fingers chopped off lol
-

No, it shapes itself round the cog. As long as you are careful when removing it nothing should be left behind. Just unwind it in the opposite direction it went on.
When I greased or cleaned chains otherwise they always seemed really gritty and crunchy afterwards. With this method that doesn't seem to happen.

I tried this out last night. So much crap in my chain, it's untrue! I think I might need to give it a de-grease/scrub and then just keep up with the tissue trick on a regular basis :)
Thanks for the tip though. Really works quite well!

Yeah tried this today. Works pretty well if you clean your chain on a regular basis. Great as a quick fix before a long ride perhaps.
Thanks

I just used my ultrasonic cleaner to clean my chain, just used white spirit as the fluid. Worked such a treat, it almost looks like new and has lost that horrible gritty feeling. I usually use this thing to clean 7" records (not with white spirit obv.), so it's doubly rad. One like this:

that's a wicked idea, I'm gonna do mine in the works ultrasonic

Used it on my mechs too which were playing up. Now fully functional.

Fed up of squeeky chains so I employed the ultimate sheldon methord to see how it went.
Boiled the hell out of the chain in loads of washing up liquid.
Did the job good, once lubed up no squeeking. Will do this again. But only on dirty winter chains.
Here's the chain cleaning link, which someone posted up on the board a year or two ago, that I promised. Seems to work quite well and no need to remove chain or use nasty cleaning chemicals.
