Shit - Please move this to mechanics and fixing, the perils of multi tabs browsing... :(

depends what threading it is and what side you are doing it on as to what direction you should be turning it.
-
• #4
the BB reads - "campagnolo made in italy 36 x 24 f" the lock ring is non drive side ofcourse
-
• #5
I was thinking of the actual BB, my bad.
-
• #6
use the proper campy tool for it, it grips more than one of the ridges of the lockring

blankface: yes, anticlockwise is correct. BB cups are the other way round to pedals: DS is left-hand thread.*
*english threading!
-
• #8
That's true if it's English threaded. Not so true if Italian threaded.
-
• #9
Oh.
-
• #10
So if it's Italian, is the NDS cup left hand thread ... and the OPer has been tightening it?
-
• #11
so Ive been tightening it? And thanks to the kind mod who moved this thread!
All I know is that its on an Italian frame and it says made in Italy which I guess suggests its Italian threading? Can someone confirm the Correct direction to loosen it? I don't want to damage it... Thanks again -
• #12
No! I was guessing, and I think I'm wrong. I think Italian threads might be both normal, right-hand, but check Sheldon, it's bound to be there.
-
• #13
Italian threads are both right handed.
How old is the frame, some Italian manufacturers have moved to English threaded but it's a recent phenomenon.

Actually - just a thought - sometimes when a thread won't budge you can unstick it by tightening it a tiny bit before loosening, to sort of give the grip of the thread a little movement ... or am I being a crazy twat?
-
• #16
It's almost certainly Italian threaded then. The easiest way to confirm is to measure the width of the BB shell, if it's 70 mm wide then it's Italian. (68 mm will mean it's English).

Don't listen to this^^ crazy twat!

Thanks ill do that to make certain. so if it IS Italian then I continue looseing anti clockwise? I'm not sure if i can get hold of one of those campag tools, I have a feeling my C spanner is part of the issue since it doesn't grip the lock-ring very well. I guess I may have to resort to my LBS... any other ideas?
thanks -

No really I'm certain ish* that this can work.
*by no means certain

Or how about freezing it with butane to make the metals contract a tiny bit?
-
• #21
Sorry, just re-read the thread, it's definitely Italian, it's 36 x 24.
To remove it you need to loosen the non-drive side by turning anti-clockwise, the drive side is the opposite though, you remove by turning clockwise.
-
• #22
Huh? I thought italian was right hand both sides? Meh.
-
• #23
Yes ive tried removing it by turning the non-drive anti-clockwise but its stuck fast. perhaps I should invest in the correct campagnolo tool.. I wonder where I can find one. grimaces at thought of cost

Go and see a bike shop. A good one that will have that tool.
Rob Sargeant had a funny extractor I couldn't find elsewhere, so try him if your obvious choices don't deliver.

It is. I'm all confuddled now (I always get confuddled before removing an Italian BB and have to double check with Zinn).
However, the design fault with the Italian BB set up is that the drive side cup loosens as you pedal, so I pretty certain I'm correct.
So I need to service my BB on my current road bike.
Ive tried lathering the Cup and cone BB lock ring with wd40 letting it rest then going at it with a C spanner but its starting to cheese the lock ring! ive tried hammer and screwdriver only to the same effect! I am trying to loosen it anti-clockwise I hope this is correct... im pretty sure it is however.
It's killing me doing damage to a piece of C-record equipment, what are my options? what can I do now even a hammer and screwdriver havent worked? I really want to avoid taking it to a bike shop due to costs etc..
Any input greatly appreciated!
