Stolen Bike recovered

Posted on
  • Hi there,
I was approached today by a guy wanting to sell me a bike with some expensive parts on. He wanted 70 which i gave him. The bike is blatantly stolen and i feel idiotic for even asociating myself with it, however i felt it was better to get it into some more responsible hands. I entirely appreciate the fact that i know noone on this forum, however i will invite you into my house and be entirely honest with you.

If anyone has recently had an entirely black fixed wheel bike with a flat bar stolen please send me an exact spec list, including size of centre to centre bb to top tube and c-t-c top tube lengths to identify it as yours. If you want to pay me the £70 you can, however i dont feel like i have earnt my money back :-( . I live in bethnal green, i asked the guy where he had got it from and he said he'd 'bought it off some crack heads down brick lane', so i imagine it was taken in this area.

Please get in touch asap if it is yours and i hope i can return it to its rightful owner.

  • Should have taken his details and reported him, if he was comfortable enough to ask you if you want the obviously stolen bike, you could have hassled a number out of him, or a name..
    Did you report him?

    either way

  • You did a good thing but I don't understand this line:

If you want to pay me the £70 you can, however i dont feel like i have earnt my money back :-(

  • I asked him some questions, he obviously wasnt the brightest of guys but wasnt going to give out his name and number. I havent reported it yet as one of my mates got his bikes stolen once and the police kept it as evidence for 4 months, so i was trying to see if i could get it back to the owner directly. Obviously if this option doesnt work out i will hand it in to the police.

  • I don't understand this. If no-one claims it, you hand it to the police, and blow your £70?

If you find a spare £100,000 down behind your sofa, can I have it? I lost it a while ago, and I can't remember where,
or when for that matter....but I assure you, it is mine.

  • I was speaking to a friend of mine who had his Condor Pista SS stolen yesterday. If that sounds close I'll get a pic up here.

  • You have got to be a little careful here, technically you are handling stolen goods! I'm sure your intentions are good, but someone else might not see it that way. You are obviously expected to recoup the money you spent on getting the bike from the original owner. I hope it works out in the end!

  • GA2G's comment is also an interesting one, what are you going to take as proof of ownership! Anybody could claim the bike is theirs. Not posting pictures publicly might be a smart move!

  • Not going to post any pictures. as i said it is an all black fixed wheel bike of a good quality with a flat handle bar. The person will know exactly what the spec is unless they really have no clue about life or money... they will also know what the size of their frame is!

As far as handling stolen goods is concerned... i am a little worried... hence why if the owner doesnt feel like giving me the £70 i dont feel i can ask for it. I am trying to be as honest and straight as i can and any advice would be welcome! Obviously i would prefer to get the money back but if i have to go down the correct alleys of taking it to the police and waiting to see if anyone claims it i will. If they dont then i have gained a pretty nice bike, if not then maybe the owner will recoup my losses, if not i'll have to live with the loss and be happy that i did the right thing!!!

  • I don't understand this. If no-one claims it, you hand it to the police, and blow your £70?

Better than the alternative - having it on your conscience. We all do things we regret later. Sometimes we have to pay for them. Simple as. Capiche?

  • Have a look in the stolen bikes thread to see if it matches anything in there

  • nothing yet dude. im going to have to hand it to the police tomorrow before it gets too late. please all go ask your mates etc... night time bump.

  • I'd give it a few more days, give more people a chance to see this threa d before you go through thye hastle of police

  • Defo give it a bit more time.

  • Jesus

the op sounds pretty genuine and as if he was trying to help out, instead we jump on him for his altruistic act

ffs give him a few days to wait for a response, sounds like he did the best in a pretty bad situation

  • Where is James and what have you done to him?

  • james is in italy, wondering what the fuck has been going on here

has just seen the popcorn thread and rim rigidity thread

  • my neighbor had his Black Moth cycle stolen yesterday from around that area. black with a deep v rear wheel. bullhorns with white tape.

  • it didnt have bullhorns, i specified flat bars. sorry man.

  • bump. anyone? anyone at all?

  • a mate had a black langster 2010 (not steel) nicked a couple of weeks ago, size large (61?) with pink or purple bars/bar tape

  • sorry dude, not that.
