Hub length issue

Posted on
  • Hi, I recently bought a second hand HED disc wheel off the forum, this came with a quick release skewer with two large spacers. I replace the quick release for a bolt on axle (130mm) however this fitted into the disc hub, but the problem is when I tried to fir the disc wheel into my 120mm spaced I found that the cones along with the hub would not fit my drop outs, is there a way of getting smaller cones that would fit?

  • you fail at uploading the pictures.

  • mm, some pictures that one could see would help..

  • just copy em into the address box at the top of your browser?
    works on mine?
if it doesn't I'll get image shack or something

  • that is because the files are on your computer, and your browser is following the link to that place on your hard drive. the internet doesn't work like that.

  • jack, this thread and vinylvillain's answer should point you in the right direction

  • I had a HED Disc that i converted using that kit

  • Sorry about that I've now got the pictures here.

  • As the hub takes up so much space, it more of a hub issue rather than an axle one as the axle would fit but the cones and other nuts are unable to fit on due to the lack of space. Also as you can see the adapter is already fitted however it came with a quick release rather than the standards HED axle.

what is the spacing on the hub?

what is the spacing on the frame?

  • 130
    120

    It's in the OP

  • Is that the official HED kit? Looks wider than the one i had

  • it looks like you just need to get smaller spacers. http://velosolo.co.uk/shoptrack.html

measure the O.L.D. (over locknut distance) of the hub (i.e. the distance between the two cone nuts) and the distance between the dropouts.

  • I roughly managed to measure the hub width as 100mm and the cones and locknut together make up an extra 40mm, or 20 each to make 140mm or 20mm to big for my drop outs.

  • ? what?

  • Could I just run cone nuts without cones?
