Powerbook G4 fan fail!

Posted on
  • Was helped out by a forum member when I was in desperate need of a computer, and I am still in the same financial crunch as when that happened but now the fan is almost completely dead. It was whirring before but it's a bad, bad mechanical sound it's making now...

Someone please recommend a reputable, not-too-expensive place to get a powerbook g4 fan replaced. If you can do it yourself, I will happily talk to you regarding payment.

    Please contact ASAP.

Oh god, I just read Superprecise's thread and I'm completely flummoxed now. I don't know what the crap is going on in there! There are multiple fans? Wait, that's a desk top. Maybe not. Anyway, after doing nothing differently, the fan calmed down and is quiet now. But still, it's an old computer and don't you sometimes have to replace fans at some stage? I know I had to do that with an old desktop PC.

  • It's probably just dusty. They get dust on the blades and get out of balance and make a grinding noise. Blow onto it hard - assuming it's the case fan and not the CPU fan (which is probably harder to get at).

  • Yea, give it a good hoover first

  • how the fnck do you hoover a laptop??? goes off to google

  • I see a lot of crud in the lefthand side vent dealy. k, guess it's time to figure out how to take this sucker apart.

  • The fans on those things are pretty shite. Get yourself one of those laptop stands that allows air underneath it as they get really hot if they've can't breath. Or rest the back of it on a thickish book or something.

  • increasing the ram in macbooks helps to lower the fan noise. also a good clean does too

  • yeah, it gets really loud when it's on my lap. thing is, this didn't happen with my other powerbook. happened even less with the ibook. I remembered hearing that powerbooks overheat easily when I got my first one (both my powerbooks are pre-owned). this is just awful, though. really distracting, can't watch any video on it. And since I can't get my iPod to work anymore (not to mention my US bought iPod speakers to work here), I use my computer to play music during massages and really need to fix this problem.

I don't remember, will ask the guy who I got this from to tell me if he'd increased RAM and if it's at the max. I need to learn how to fix my puters myself, it's too much money otherwise!

Plus, I have to be able to run Windows soon so I can work from home. From a tutorial I'm seeing, it looks like I can take out the old hard drive and install the new powerpc hard drive, if I can get ahold of one. this chassis is a bit fncked, though, disks don't go in well. it was a great stop-gap, though! I'm not slaggin it at all, in case my knight in white satin armor is reading this thread.

  • yes, hippy, I know you're just gonna tell me to get a pc

  • Is it a 12" powerbook? To disassemble it and get to the fan, you're looking at in the region of 26 tiny screws. http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/files/G4alum12.pdf has instructions. Having done this myself, I would not recommend it.

If duct-taping a hoover to the vents doesn't help, Micromend, on Tottenham Street will be able to open it and replace anything that needs it. Don't expect charming service, though they may be able to help with other maintenance, like a replacement battery or whatnot.

  • not really a good idea to hoover a laptop. loads of static electricity at the edge of the pipe

better to get a bottle of compressed air, the cleaning type thing

  • There will be two fans (top left & right). Micromend are good, though miserable. Get an appointent at the genius bar they will tell you for free whether you need a new fan or just a clean. They may be able to get your ipod working as well?

Also have you tried one of those fan control programs (fan control powerbook g4 - Google Search) they may be a good short term solution?

  • sounds fucked! better give it to me, Ill dispose of it for you

(or you could try the canned air cleaning)

depending which model you have there is a way to lift off the keyboard - then just buy a can of compressed air and blow all the crap out of there.
heres a vid that will help you get the keyboard off:

*also just incase you have never used compressed air before - keep the can upright!

  • yes, hippy, I know you're just gonna tell me to get a pc

I'm too knackered for that. As well as blowing it you can wipe the fan blades with a cotton tip thing.
