Vans Era 45 CA Fixed - Broken - Opinions?

Posted on
  • Be interested to see how anybody else has found these shoes?

Just wanted to get this off my chest as Vans (VF corporation) have been one of the most difficult to contact and unhelpful companies i've had the misfortune of dealing with in a long while.... this is just my opinion and not the opinion of LFGSS!

"The Era 45 Fixed comes with heavier suede and thicker
canvas to help with the rigors of being jammed into toe clips" ***

Talk about marketing bullshit... there is nothing heavier about the suede on these shoes......

I had these for about 22 days before the suede tore along the side of the shoe, in that time i didn't actually ride in them much as they were my "new" shoes that i didn't want to ruin, that's not to mention the week when i couldn't wear them because the right hand heel had a big lump of seams & stitching that gave me a massive blister...

Then to add insult to injury, as i'd worn the shoes and the retailer would not take them back i have had to pay £9 to send them back to Vans to be told by a massively non-plussed member of Vans staff that she'd passed the buck to someone else and it might take a few weeks? to sort out something for me... maybe....

    Great customer service there guys..!

Right i'm off to hit-up some Kool fixie blogs and vent my spleen.....!!!

  • Bad luck.

Vans always were really cheap shit. Back when I was skating most of us never wore em cos they cost an absolute bomb here, were pretty cheap in the US though. Converse all stars for skating, later on Puma States and Gazelles.

As for these being 'cycling specific', it's sad that they seem to have tried to bandwagon without actually developing a proper product. Some decent sneakers that were up to cycling in (like ACG Okwahn) but with recesses for MTB cleats and really decent stiff midsoles would be great.

The answer? Wear Shimano touring trainers, or make your own.

    They lose.

  • Surely if you'd return them to the shop they'd either give you a refund or another pair?

  • (over jaw's shoulder, jabbing a pointy finger:) YEAH!

  • it's the shop's responsibility. when they buy in the vans they agree to take returns responsibility (legal and practical). some good brands sort it out directly to be nice, but it is the shop's issue.

your statutory rights mean that the product needs to be fit for purpose. regardless of their returns policy, the stat rights supersede. and as it's under 6 months, the legal onus is on them to disprove your claim.

    What he said ^

  • I love Vans, but this doesnt suprise me - the build quality is shite

  • i always thought the quality of the authentics was reasonable for 35 quid.

  • See if they'll swap you for some proper cycling shoes.

  • They're a really mixed bag. I'll get one pair that will last 6 months, and then another pair will only last 3 months.

If i get past 3 months I'm generally happy. It's usually the soles rather than the tops that go for me though

  • that's bad luck. where did you buy them? surely the shop should recognize the defect and do something about it themselves. i had a pair of vans which after a week of skating i noticed the heel end of the sole was flapping off, i took them back to the shop and they immediately agreed it was a factory defect and changed them. never had it with another pair of vans and Ive been skating their shoes for ten years.

  • Yeah, you're right, many pairs I've had over the years have lasted really well. So I take back what I said. Some of them are shit.

sidis make my feet really cold.

  • To their credit, I've been wearing a pair of half cabs for over 3 years now, awesome, awesome shoe, been using it for skateboarding and cycling, probably 5 days a week.

  • That's the thing, i've got plenty of other pairs of Vans... i ride in all of them, yes the soles fuck up because they are nice and soft, but i've NEVER had the uppers fall apart on me... that's why i was wondering what other peoples experiences were...

and re. the returning to shop, yes i probably should have been more demanding or at least checked my rights better, but in some ways i actually wanted Vans, as the manufacturer to be aware of this problem and give them a chance to apolgise, take some reponsibility & actually admit there is something up.... anyway returning is not an option Vans have the shoes... and i await there verdict... hopefully at least a replacment & then some... (but not holding my breath...!)

  • Discontinued... there should be a thread like this for these.

But as previously stated in the thread, it's the stores responsibility as your contract of sale is with them, theirs with the distributor etc etc.
It's a pain in the ass when people break this chain this usualy leads to "bad" service.

Cheer up...Ever skated in a pair of vans?

  • vans I've found alot depends on shoe and your feet
eras/authentics i rip the sides of in a month even just walking
the new vulcanized ones are holding on strong after 6 months

How the fuck have skate shoes lasted you 3 years?!? I must be doing something wrong.

I used to go through shoes (yes I've gone through about 5 pairs of Half Cabs) every couple of months. I skated 5-7 days a week every day for 8 years.

  • I've had the same pair of SK8 Hi's for 7 y now**, always abused, never f*cked...
(but I do own shit loads of trainers, that's the secret to make them last. Just wear different ones all the time)
