Only 2 sizes exist.
31.8 or 34.9, probably 31.8 if it's steel.
Mech should match your groupset, it doesn't have to of course but will look wankey and function poorly if it doesn't.

Take a good few photos of your bike and I'll tell you the answer.

And 28.6mm. Which it'll probably be for a steel frame.

Correct, though can be hard to find, but shimming a larger one is fine.
OP - all modern mechs will be fine.

I'd be using it with Simplex RetroFriction Shifters (non-indexed) - if that makes any difference ?

Indexing happens in the levers on all modern groupsets that i'm aware of. The derailleurs are just a hinge with a spring - the levers dictate the amount by which the mechs will move. If your shifters aren't indexed it will make no difference. Hope this helps.
Also with front mechs there's not much to them, so they're probably the least important bit to have matching (correct me if i'm wrong).

Front mech questions...
1) Can I convert a braze on Chorus 10spd mech to a band on? If so - how and where do I get the parts?
2) If I can't do the above, I can get a 32mm one for cheap - I'll be putting the group on a SLX steel frame - will that be OK to shim, and what should I use as a shim?
Cheers in advance

Ok, so just found this..
http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/Campagnolo-DERAILLEUR-SPARES-Campagnolo-2011-Clamp-for-braze-on-Front-Derailleur/CAMPGRSZ150
so I can convert (nice) - will 32mm be ok to shim? -

Front mech questions...
Yes it is possible with Chorus .. generally Campagnolo parts can be rebuilt but you'd need a second mech to get the parts easily. It's easier to use a secondary clamp like you've found. But double check your outside diameter .. it could be 28.6mm outside diameter - 531 is certainly 28.6 befitting a 27.2 seatpost. If it is 31.8 the 32 will work ok. Otherwise I think SJS do a 28.6 clamp ..

I need a 28.6 clamp but fortunately Sjs has a shim I can use with the clamp from Ribble. Should be all good.

I just got a 28.6mm adaptor from Chain Reaction: £2.00 post free, they even chucked in a couple of electrolyte drink samples.

Cheers for the link
Hi there,
I'd be grateful if anyone could please tell me what size band-on front derailleur I require for my 753 frame (SB7953). (I've become a bit paranoid about sizes, after my seatpost experiences).
Are there any lightweight front mechs thats anyone can recommend ? Will a modern mech such as the SRAM Rival or SRAM RED do the job ? (It would be for a double chainset).
Does anyone have a lightweight one to sell ?
Thank you for any advice.
