Are There Really No Hipsters in China?

  • From Slate. (Apologies if already posted!)

    • "Hipster fashion only really works by communicating your irony—in other words, someone needs to 'get it.' Hipster irony in dress would most likely be misinterpreted in Chinese society as simple poverty or weirdness." *
  • There must be a few cycling through trying to find themselves though.

  • "Laugh at the poor, not the prostitutes"

    that's brilliant.

  • Wealthy chinese young people are the biggest suckers for designer labels & luxury tat ever.

A lot of young people in Hong Kong are massively into streetwear/hip hop stuff, including the dancing.

They buy all the streetwear hipster crap like Bape & Billionaire boys club stuff. There are very much "conventional" hipsters in Hong Kong too, as there is generally a lot of cool trendy people there. The culture is different though, not like the UK/USA style snobby hipsters. Just fashion/product driven coolness/trends. Hong Kong leads the way in terms of pop/youth culture that spills a little into mainland china.

    However,

A lot of the new mega cities are developing into greater, modern consumer mega centres with skyscrapers & massive shopping centres than even Hong Kong. These places have their own goods-loving young wealthy folk. But They are less "hip/street" than the Hong Kong kids, so more likely to buy some louis vuitton than streetwear stuff.

  • Japan is the same.. people are too busy buying NEW brands/items.. Ironic crappy old stuff will never be popular

  • Irony and crapy old stuff isnt popular in NYC either (well maybe in the suburbs like Brooklyn)
