  • Hello,

I've searched past posts and read them.

My (English) BB thread has worn. I went into London Bicycle Workshop today and kind chap kindly tried to retap said thread but alas to no avail.

As I understand it my options are:

    1. Get a threadless BB.
LBW man said Stronglight are best, but that'll be £80-ish.
http://www.velo-orange.com/grcruthbobr.html have been suggested on other, erm, threads.
Wondering if anybody here has used either?
I need axle length around 111mm, or even less.

    2. I believe I can get the BB relined and then have a thread tapped.
Can I get this done without damaging the paintwork?
Is there anywhere in London I could pedal over to and have it done while I sip a latte somewhere?
If I relined could I have it threaded Italian? (as I have a new Campag BB already)
What can I expect to pay for this kind of thing? (BB, not coffee, smart-arse)

I would appreciate the input of some of you experienced bods.

    Thanks!

  • i'd imagine relining would involve brazing so would damage the paint

  • bugger. thanks.

  • You don't want to have your BB re-threaded Italian, really, you don't. It has right hand threads on both sides so the non-chainwheel side cup is always trying to wind itself out.

And anyway, I'm not sure it can be done as Italian BB shell is bigger than the English. You could sleeve down Italian to English but not the other way round.

If the frame is worth it, I would bite the bullet and have the BB re-threaded properly. If not then go threadless BB

  • Thanks,
Frame itself is so-so lightweight steel, I just like the paintjob!
When you say re-thread the BB properly what do you mean?
    Ta :-)

  • i believe you could have the english bb recut as italian, because italian is bigger.

"YST Threadless Bottom Bracket for Damaged Frames"

  • sumo how funny i was just looking at that very page when your post came through :-)

    Need 111mm...

  • in that case:

  • Put that in and re-tap thread?

    Reckon it'll take the torque?

  • Not a clue to be honest. Maybe use a threadless BB and dish the rear wheel to the left 6mm?

  • considering 111mm is a common campag bb length, i will assume you are using campag, which have iso bb taper. the VO bb has jis taper.

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbtaper.html

so assuming that you are using ISO cranks, you need a VO bb length of 103mm.

basically, what cranks and bb are you using?

  • got a campag veloce bb but that needs to go back to the shop cos the thread turned out to be english not italian.
    cranks from condor, own brand.

  • Most threadless bottom brackets need tightening up every now and then (the YST one is apparently rather bad at staying tight). The Velo Orange Grand Cru is good because you can tighten it with a lockring spanner - this means you don't need to remove your cranks every time it needs tightening, so you save from buggering up the square-taper holes from repeated removing and reinstalling of your cranks.

  • Thanks, that makes it not so bad.
I wish they came in plain old silver, that orange and blue colourway really jars.
    Thanks for advice.

  • A bit of abrasive paper will take off the anodizing without too much trouble. Say 600g to remove it, then if you want a smoother finish, 1000g followed by 1500g. Keep the paper very wet so it doesn't clog up.

  • Thanks frink,
Rob Sargent just told me the exact same thing!

  • velo libre,
thanks for that jis/iso note, it slipped me by when i read the velo orange web page.
i think this vo bracket will be the way to go.

or just get another frame :-)

so the bb is iso, the condor cranks are rebranded miche primato's? or sugino messengers?

  • Neither,
Don't know who makes them but this is what they look like.
    They recommended Campag 111mm BB.
    Thanks.

  • hmm, i guess they are iso if they recommended an iso bb. so just keep that in mind when ordering the VO one as its jis. is your current bb shell english or italian?

  • hi, the shell's english.
    so you reckon the 103mm?

    erm, fancy fitting it?

  • according to sheldon's site and my calculations:

iso crank on jis spindle sits 4.5mm further out than on an iso bb of same length. so a 103mm jis bb would be like using a 112mm iso bb? i am bad at bb length calculations.

i don't, but someone probably will.

  • Okay, I'll check with the guy at freshstripe.
    thanks for your help :-)
