I thought they were a bit of a joke, but cycling up stairs seems serious enough to prove that wrong! Although I spoke to one once who tried to show off that on a REALLY busy day he'll cover 18 miles!! probably at 12mph average as well!!They should join the tour!

last week i saw 2 police man going down a stairs with the bike in front of a school, but really nervous because they dont want to fall in front of all the people but still want to be tough doing the stairs. heheh crazy to see this.

I like when the trainee falls over followed by a shout from the instructor:
"Its okay sweetie, just get up and keep going"
As if, its America. Fall over and you'll get shot in the face. Fact.

they do seem to use shitty locks but i guess there is not much of a market.

I take an instinctive step back – straight on to the front wheel of another police bike.
reminds me of a time i was in the old people's town that is emsworth, in the train station, possibly a little drunk, go outside to my friends, it is dark and going from the bright lights of the train station to the dark outside i step on something and fall over. turns out a copper left his bike on the floor directly across the exit.

"We've got a lot more stuff to worry about than just pulling your gun out of the holster and pulling the trigger".... WTF .... quote of the week?

ha! I think this has been covered but whats the etiquette on seeing an officer cycling on the pavement? I was tempted to have a pop in jest but he had that predator look on, scanning the public for his next hunt - that prob would have ended up with me getting a talking to and a thumb pushed into my windpipe.

I asked one cycling police fellow if I could borrow a pump when I got a flat and didn't have my trusty saddle bag with me......
he didn't have one.
I guess they don't do 'puncture repair' in their training.

That just spawned an idea in my head: What if we nick all the locked/unlocked police bikes in order to demonstrate how annoying it is to be a bike theft victim and how nothing is being done (until the bike belongs to the police)?
Could be interesting?

I think the 4 year sentence would be more interesting

Is that the standard charge for bike theft or the special clause for nicking a police bike?

I think the nicking of "all" or the majority of police bikes would land you in jail with more than one conviction maybe even a stay at belmarsh as some sort of terrorist for disruptuion to the police service (ha!)

Ha i remember when i used to courier in chicago someone nicked a cop's bike downtown ...i think it was some chancer crackhead who just didn't give a fuck nevertheless if you can imagine bike cops being even less friendly than they normally are..they weren't very nice after that incident..

Dredging this as its kind of a 'Bad-Cycle-Police-Cycling-Spotted' post. On Soho Sq Monday two cycle coppers turning left from Carlisle Street onto Soho Square, first one went through fine second was a PCO, didnt look right and turned left straight into the path of a white van. Schadenfreude would've liked to have seen him get a beep and scare the shit out of him but driver would probably have been booked. At least he didnt hit him, hard explaining to a cycle copper that it was his fault. Also you'd never want to see a cyclist get hit, even a police one.
interesting blog post on the gruniad about police bike training that i thought people might enjoy seeing. sorry if a repost but i didn't see it anywhere else...
