Shimano nexus and vertical drop outs?

is it possible to run a nexus system (or similar) on a set of vertical drop outs (on a mountain bike) or do i need some horizontal drop outs to adjust chain tension?

no need for a wheel yet, but when/if i do ill check if you still have it.

you wouldn't have correct chain tension without, magic gear is crap.
