I don't see how a different memorial would be anymore accessible to those sectors of the public who don't understand the ghost bike?
I think the GhostBike program is fine and should be supported, abandoning it for a competing program would just be confusing and unhelpful. It'd be more helpful to suggest improvements for the GB scheme.

I do. A black road sign with a white bicycle shape and
xxxx died here
dd/mm/yyyywould be a lot more effective than an old bike covered in white paint.
If it looked official enough it would never be removed either. -

Hmm, but what I'm getting at is that it shouldn't be a 'rival' to ghostbike, rather a change/addition to what's going on already.
I happen to like the large bikes painted white but you're right that they don't carry much information, and tend to get removed.

Ghostbikes have the problem that people don't 'get' them. They look like just another abandoned bike to most of the public. As a means to deliver a message they are pretty ineffective.

Maybe a ghost bike for say a month whilst a long term marker is made?

Yes, signs take a while to make, whereas ghost bikes can be deployed quickly.
You know what, if I was Boris I'd be making this official policy as a road safety measure to remind drivers of their duty of care.
Maybe we should suggest it to him? -

Like the very clear signs idea, BQ and agree with CG that they shouldn't rival the Ghost Bikes at all. I was just bringing it up as an idea to create more awareness as a whole. There is a risk that the public might see them and be put off cycling but then I guess that is just the other end of the alerting drivers wedge. The thing about how long the plaques would take to make is interesting. Working to a pre-defined template I imagine it wouldn't be long if it was laser cut in a deep black acrylic. Also there's the time it often takes to find out who the cyclist was etc and whether the family would want a sign put up (no idea why they wouldn't).
Just been doing the rather miserable activity of reading some of the recent 'Rider Down' threads.
Saw someone suggesting that rather than the habit of individual Ghost Bikes being left at the scene, it might be nice to have a set sign or memorial for these locations.
I'm sure this has probably been talked about somewhere before but couldn't find it in a general thread/post.
Although to some of the cycling community, the ghost bikes mean a lot, I imagine to a lot of the public, they won't have a clue.
A friend of mine spent a bit of time putting out laser-cut wooden Magpies in similar places in a project called 'One for sorrow'. In my head, something like this could be perfect? No religious connotations, decorative and distinctive.
I dunno, ramble over- I expect to either get interest or shot down, as per the forum rules!
Cheers,
Tom.
