  • Ok Proto 1 is complete:

Same principle as Max's but 34 x 1.8mm (narrower) tubing. All pops apart easily but seems to hold ok. Thinking the long 2m back bar could actually have a connector in the middle to split it in two for ease of carrying. Rear stays need some kind of cap, possible same as front uprights. Haven't found the right net yet and not sure how to support it across the width of the goal. Could try a length of the same tubing gently resting in the top caps.

    Cost:
    3 x 2m pipe @ £1.45 - £4.35
    2 x T joint @ £1.04 - £2.08
    8 x corners @ £0.85 - £6.80

    Total - £13.23

Could be a few amendments/extras needed yet though.

It's really light and will move easily when knocked which could be a problem. It will all give easily if someone falls on it though so safety-wise I think it's ok.

Not sure about the depth, easily adapted with junior hacksaw though.

  • awesome.

nice one dan! When you say it will 'give' if fallen on, does that mean break? If used for a tournament there will be lots of falling on them.

Also someone suggested filling the base with sand, and then just tipping it away at the end of the game, refilling when next used.

  • I don't think it will break too easily, all the joints spin round (there's little rubber seals inside which grip it) so the uprights for example will fold down if fallen on ( I think - time will tell)

  • looked quickly for a football equivalent (easier to get here) but the holes in the mesh may be too big for a polo ball

  • B&Q only had like strawberry netting which is too fine. Will look now.

  • Nice work Dan. I'd definitely split the back bar to ease transport.

What effect would 2 additional cross bars have ? One on the front and one across the back to support the net might make it all a little more stable.

  • a cross bar will increase the likelihood of something breaking if you fall on it. Bungee cable (like K'ruhe) is ideal, I think.

  • Thought that but was worried about safety and it braking. Would have to rest in there gently so it gave if fell on.

    (sorry that was @ Andy)

  • Bungee will pull the upright in i think. Looked like Max's were doing that.

  • Nice - golf would be perfect, I think.

  • How about doing the foldable tent pole thing - lace a strong piece of elastic (like bungee cord) through the pieces, then if someone falls on them they can collapse without braking, then snap back into place easily. Plus they are easy to transport as they're all connected and fold into a neat bundle.

  • tent poles have a joint in them not just elastic. the joint would snap

  • If it works out cheaper to get hockey nets, I can pick some up when in Canada next week.

  • Ok. I give up. No more suggestions.

  • Nice - golf would be perfect, I think.

feckin expensive though. You need 4m width (180+80+80) and then probably 4m length for two goals. That plus postage is £77.04. ouch.

  • Hockey net = 1.8x1.2m if you can make that work?

  • what about badminton nets, we use them in the school, the holes are small enough, and they are cheap as peas

  • Resting something on the top tube isn't ideal as you'll need to keep resetting it in place, elastic with stiffer uprights would be better (the uprights would still give if fallen onto, but stiff enough to hold elastic in place)?

  • Think the badminton meshing will be strong enough to take a sweet slap shot? Doesn't take much to stop a shuttlecock.

  • if we need to buy two of them, do the netting double???

  • anyway was just an idea

    #backtogoogle

  • Nice work Dan.
